Just booked my first fishing charter

Got a trip booked in Wolcott for 1st week of June. Me and this crew do 4 or 5 trips a year to various places in NY and Lake Ontario is the one I look forward to the most. Got a guy I worked with who has 2 charter boats out of Bklyn for stripers, we kill em every time and I still prefer the salmon in Ontario. Pound for pound the salmon fight puts the stripers to shame.

If you've never done one before, you will definitely have a good time. My first one was just off-shore Long Island many years ago and I still have memories of that one (8 hours), watching the sunset on the Atlantic, returning just after midnight and catching *everything* when we were about 1 hour from returning back to shore.

I'm 90% sure I'm going to do my first charter this summer. We haven't decided on Erie or Ontario yet

We've been doing the Bklyn trip for over 20yrs. We used to live in Bklyn, the boat we go on is very experienced and I have never had a bad trip with him. This is our 5th year doing Ontario. Third year with Capt Chuck out of Walcott, we usually do 2 trips with him, one in June and one in Sept. Last year we only did June.

Dont know for sure, but I dont think Erie has as much fish as Ontario.

Lake Ontario is nice and they have salmon. Most Lake Erie charters are for walleye and honestly it’s hard to enjoy catching a walleye. If you want to mimic the fight of a walleye just hook a small log onto you line in water with a bit of current and that will simulate catching a walleye. Walleye are great eating fish but I’ve caught them and while reeling in I thought they were only seaweed and was surprised to see 15-20” walleye on the end of the line.
Smallmouth are plenty fun to catch and Lake Erie is pretty world class for them. If you go and want to get some meat I’d say go for walleye and chances are you’ll end up hooking into a few small mouth bass anyway.

I’d love to do another charter this year but I put out too much cash this year to be comfortable dropping more on something frivolous. I did a grouper charter on a vacation this spring and caught some 50-60 lbs fish and it was a blast but it was $1,000. The vacation was another $5,000-$6,000 Then I go to the 1000 islands and rent a boat for a week fishing and that’s $700. I then bought a car for my son for $15,000 so I’m tapped out on luxury expenses for the season.
I will reevaluate in fall because I would love to do a Muskie one and there is a guy by me that does them and he has a great reputation.

Did a walleye trip over 20 yrs ago, was less than impressed. We caught a lot of fish but would have rather caught bass. Like you say, it was like pulling in carp, no spark, just dead weight. In Ontario we get a mix of salmon, lake trout, big browns and steelhead, all fight like mad.
