.450/400 Nitro Ex
I have a few projects going but I was considering building a NY compliant hunting rifle based
on the AK action. The reason is simply to prove one can do a riffle in an alternative caliber
and still make it quite flexible for bursh hunting.
This is the idea:
- Find a good source for a slant receiver.
- Might need to find a 308 winchester receiver and bolt to chamber the rifle in 358 winchester.
If I cannot find the 308 parts then I will chamber the rifle in the 35 Gunner wildcat that shares
the same bolt head with the 7.62x39
- The reason I want the slant receiver is to fit a contender hunting stock that we have already proven
in other build to make this SAFE BS compliant.
- I am also planning in making a quick detach piece for the front trunion so I can swap calibers
if I desire. I might actually buy several front trunions and chamber other calibers for that
purpose.
- For the barrel I will need a gas block that is a tad larger than the AKM and straight tube.
Perhaps the RPK that I believe it is .750 but I am not sure. I will need your help.
- For the handguard I will machine one myself that is fully folated and will be tubular but
open on the top similar to those they sell for the saiga 12.
But I will need your help from Kalash builders. Where to find receivers and parts, surplus
is fine but it must be good quality and compatible bolts and front trunion that is the most
critical part of this experiment.
Any help is greatly appreciated. If I can get this going then I will post progress and others
might build other calibers. I honestly think a small carbine with the kalash action all cerakoted
makes a fine rugged "lets go beat the bushes" hunting carbine. We just need more
power to tackle the large game with authority.
I thought about the SKS but it is quite bulky and heavy and will not be able to find 308 bolts
nor fabricate a quick barrel swap for it.
