I was already thinking this. He’s an asshole and I’m sure at some point I’ll have to sell my home because of this. My taxes are already sky high. I’ll move to the country at some point. Just have to convince the wife.
Glad when I refinanced I did the 20 year and not the 15 year. Also glad my wife got her $17,000 raise so Cuomo can just take it.

PS @Saltwater60 just saw your post- our refi is a 30 year with intent to pay it in 15- but we can bail faster on a lower payment and pay longer if we have to.

I had a discussion with my wife the other day about this. We agreed that if the financial situation changed next year, significantly, we'd seriously consider moving over the border to PA. So whether we move or not is in Cuomo's hands. It makes no difference to me where I work, since I wasn't commuting before this happened.
So it's really up to Cuomo. I'm not as trapped as I used to be. I could afford the move. Painful, but I could do it.

Anyone who didn’t see this coming probably thinks there are more than 2 genders and socialism will work "this time".
Im seriously 100% on board with this idea, ive often thought about it.
The problem is that me alone would just wnd up in jail owing more money.
But......if we got 10,000,000 NYers to refuse to pay taxes and not care if they try to garner our wages, we could at least make a point.
At one time we considered going completely off grid and give up ALL government entitlments.....police, fire, ambulance..... but in NYS that would not affect our taxes like in some states.

I keep wondering if my department will ultimately go to 100% remote work if you want to, at least for certain offices in high rent cities. It wouldn't surprise me, long term leases notwothstanding I know the firm is looking at the issue ("why do we pay so much for so much real estate?")
If they do, all bets are off, FUAC.

This would give SOOOO MANY people in NY a shot at getting out. NY would try to find a way to prevent full remote work options. Maybe require one day a week onsite by executive order, which, sadly many people/companies would follow. My company has a HUGE HQ in another state, 1,000's of employees, all but security and absolutely critical staff allowed on campus, and it has been closed since March. I am sure they have been looking at down sizing physical work space. NY will find a way to tax people, even if it is illegal.

I don't think they could get away with any kind of an order like that. Regardless of the other stuff they've gotten away with. It's a far cry from "you are NOT allowed to be at X location" to "you MUST be at X location."
What they will do is make the exit tax so punitive that it won't be worth it for most people to move away.

I don't think they would get away with it either but the bar has been raised for what they will mandate, and people will follow. cuomo is going to punish us more, and continue to intentionally destroy this state until he gets a federal bailout.

How would an exit tax even be enforced? Yeah, you couldn't come back to NY, but how would NY enforce an exit tax for people who moved to other states?
A NY state exit tax isn't enforceable once you're out of NY. Maybe against your assets in NY, but once you're out of NY they have no control over you.

Yeah but what happens when that tax is say 20% of the sale price on a $200,000 or 300,000 house? That's some real money ($40,000 - 60,000) that either the seller or buyer would have to pay on top of the other stupid ass fees the state makes you pay when buying / selling a home. Hell my refi the state fees were a huge part of the closing costs and that was just a refi.

I believe there is already a ½% tax on the sale of your house that is relatively new. And with more and more people leaving in the past few years, many have been subject to tax audits. Depending on how connected you still are to the state you may still be liable for NYS taxes even though you physically reside in another state
