Doesn't the lighter fluid eventually evaporate away? Also you can crush, shatter or otherwise break a lighter. Fero rods you can stash away indefinitely and throw into a pack without concern.

I guess they have a purpose depending on location. If you get the rods wet, like dropping them in a creek, you can still use them. They just hold up better for survival. A Bic lighter can be stepped on and crushed.

I’ve got big plastic bottle of zippo fluid I’ve been using for years. As long as you don’t leave the nozzle open it doesn’t evaporate. Bic’s will store for many years if there not used.
Well a package of Bics will definitely make it onto the shelf alongside some fero rods.
I'm thinking about taking a trip to TN when the new GlockStore opens. They have all that shit. It would be a shame if one somehow found it's way into my car and came back with me. Of course that would be wrong and I would never do that...........

Back in my scouting days I use to tell the parents to hit garage sales, thrift stores and day2 of estate sales to buy gear cheap because the kids were going to out grow or wreck the gear anyway. My winter trunk bag collection cost me maybe $20 and it has enough for 4 people. Good thing I'm not a fashion slave.

Okay, so long range pills then. Maybe with not me behind the trigger but y'know, a competent shooter could reach out effectively that far with these. I read once that the Mk 262 cartridge delivers about the same amount of energy at 800 yards as a light .38 Special load has at the muzzle. This from the 18" Mk 12 SPR so I figure from a 16" 600 yards is doable and effective enough.

Big fan of the strike anywhere and also of the lifeboat/hurricane matches even if they are a little pricey. I pick up 25-50 here and there when I'm ordering something else or they're on sale.

For meal calorie counting ... A pyramid mentality works best in those situations where it's needed.
Think European style... Big breakfast, mid sized lunch and small dinner. Intermittent fasting then with at least 10, but 12 hours of no calorie intake works best! This way, your calorie intake is matching physical activity. Protein is important... And watch that salt in those prepped meals! Too much will make you use too much water, unless forced marching when the water retention will need salt, lol.
Ammo, well, I think 1k is the minimum to have on hand. .22lr is a wonderful round too for many reasons.
Fuel storage is something I might need to expand upon. Have 4 - 5gal cans and a few smaller ones. LP is ok for stationary needs, those Sternos are great for emergency or travel use.
Most decent Armageddon food bucket suppliers are backlogged... Any that I'd invest in. But then there's some like Peak Fuel that are awesome, but expensive per meal. And yeah, I'll open one here and there when lazy for a meal or just to try something out that I haven't.
Is a crazy fucking world we are in right now... And it's exhausting the daily bombardment of the negative energy, negative press, negative everything... Feels like pressure is slowly but ever building and unless there's a release, it's gonna blow!

Mowers, quads, UTV my truck and my wife's Jeep. Rotate all of the time. When about half are used, I bring them home, refill them and take them back to the land.
Big fan of the #10 cans. Many places sell them, good food. You ever buy from LDS?I used to store rice, beans, and pasta but stopped since you need to monitor how old they are and the time it takes to cook them. You would also need to cook them outside and call attention to yourself if you have nearby neighbors. I now mostly focus only on the Mountain House #10 cans. Nothing else for food. That way when desperate and I have to open them, all I have to do is boil water to eat. No cooking smell. For water I bought a few filters from Amazon to purify water from my local stream.
Ammo is a few thousand rounds for my pistols. The pistol will be my primary defensive weapon. I have been thinking of getting one of those Glock carbine conversions like this below. Along with a .22LR slide. That way, I can consolidate one platform for multiple uses with just the change of a slide and a quick insert into this chassis all carried in a backpack.
I love Ferro rods in the rain, wet and snowy conditions. I always have some around, good tool, but never my first choice in fire making.

Another huge #1 for LDS we have made numerous trips to their storehouse in NJ. One of the things that I would have done differently when we first started going down this road 15+ years ago was to start with the LDS and not doing large amounts of wheat. We have worked through it eventually, but not the best first steps we could have taken. Neither would be going heavy into mountain house and that type of stuff. For us some was good, but bang for the buck there are much better ways to go.
in hindsight, we should have built out a 30 day supply of shelf stable items we already use, then take that to 60 days. Then staples in #10 cans, etc. at this point along our journey, we are doing ”luxury“ items like cocoa nibs, meats, FD shallots, etc. it is stuff we also regularly use in our cooking rotation. probably every month we make a small batch of dark chocolate from the nibs. This AM for breakfast, a small amount dehydrated retried beans were use to make our egg wrap. It’s really cliche, but true. Store what you eat, eat what you store.
