Legislation introduced to allow New York students to take mental health days

New York State Senator Brad Hoylman announced Thursday he has introduced legislation that would allow New York students to take mental health days.

According to Hoylman, New York law currently requires schools to develop their own attendance policy and determine which absences are excused and unexcused. The new legislation would establish mental or behavioral health issues as a permitted reason for an absence. This would also require the New York State Education Department to implement the change in law.

An answer to a question nobody asked. Any medical absence turns into an excused absence once documentation is provided. If they become numerous enough to be an issue, there isn't a district around that won't err on the side of the student. Thanks Brad for your solution in search of a problem.

I invented mental health days circa 1973 in high school. Called gone fishing. Don't need no stinking politician to give me time off.

Thus we have an entire generation forfeiting their right to own a gun over the desire to skip a school day.... Think back to the adults we have worked with in dealing with sick days .... Every single sick day is used ... Every year... Now look at children seeing an avenue get out of class.... How does this prepare the next generation to deal with life beyond of school .... Get yelled at by the boss and you need a few days off to adjust to the trauma... Snowflakes on steroids...this is what we will be producing.....
