I guess I do not see the newsworthy story here? DC is not exactly a crime free zone and the White House is smack in the middle of the mess. A "block away" from the Whitehouse is a huge area and very well may have absolutely nothing to do with politics.
Except that he deliberately traveled there from his home (Indiana?) in a plan to commit suicide by cop. So I would guess that there was some kind of political bent to it. He could just as easily done that back home and saved the gas from driving.
Severe TDS and trying to make a political statement seems more likely.
