My 16 year old wants a sword-any recommendations?

I don’t know much about swords. My sons 16th birthday was the other day. My waive said she had him taken care of since I was traveling for work. Then she said yesterday I didn’t get him much since I thought you guys were going to pick out a sword together. I was like WTF??!!
So here we are a couple days late trying to figure out swords that I know nothing about. I thought about just seeing if he wanted to go to cabelas to buy a good quality knife since they are more functional but in case he says no I figured I’d ask here for recommendations.
Any thoughts on descent swords for the $100 range or so?

Depends. Maybe it's for display. I collect knives, just because, no real reason.

In the $100 range you aren't going to find any "serious" swords. But you can probably find what you are looking for.

I think the biggest question in that price range is going to be what style does he want ? A Katana, a Claymore, a Rapier, a Cutlass, some cool fantasy sword, something else ?

There are a lot of possibilities, and I think that's going to be the biggest question.

This. My son collects swords and pocket knives so I can ask him for a reco, but there are many styles to choose from. Get an idea of what type he wants first. If it's just for display you can probably get one fairly inexpensively.

swords are not toys they can be very dangerous. Maybe a cheaper stainless sword my be better a quality carbon steel blade will be very sharp.

If your son plans on using a sword at some point for martial arts, something like tameshigiri with nihonto for an example, make sure to NOT buy anything stainless steel. Look for high carbon steel blades. There is no perfect middle ground as it will depend on its use and maintenance requirements. The reviews you see really are helpful in this instance when you're not sure what to look for. Lower carbon content HC steels like 1045 will be safer and probably the most cost effective for a first sword that I'd recommend. The down side will be that the edge hardness isn't spectacular, but that shouldn't be a major concern.

Stainless steel swords are not good for anything but displaying IMO, unless they very short like not even wakazashi type length, but more like an extended dagger or o-tanto size which is still questionable. They can be super dangerous because they're most likely to break and separate upon impact, as apposed to bending or warping which can be fixed. I would not recommend using a cheap sword though unless you know everything about it that you possibly could. Injuries with swords make firearm injuries look like a joke. Safety wise, a cheap poorly constructed sword is like 10,000,000,000X more dangerous than a firearm in the wrong hands.

I’ll ask him what style he wants. He’s a great responsible kid. He has great grades and he’s a very kind kid.

Sorry maybe I misrepresented this. He wants one for display. He already has a few very cheap swords from my brother in law. I doubt he will use it for anything at all.
He uses throwing axes and throwing knives responsibly as well as his .22 riffle. He’s very responsible with zero safety violations with blades or guns

I agree I tried to sway him towards a descent quality pocket knife but he said he’d rather have a sword. Honestly I feel he’s responsible enough to make that decision on his own. He’s like a mini adult and he is very responsible with his belongings and his money. He’s saves more than he spends. He’s had knives for a few years now and not a scratch from one. He has like 10-12 knives so I just think he’s looking for something different.

That first one is nice. Too bad I just bought him the cold steel katana machete. It was like $45.00. If $45.00 is what makes the kid happy I’m happy to spend it. He says 100% out of trouble. Never gotten in any trouble at all in school or out of school.
Also he can chop some vegetation at my parents property with it. He wanted some cheap crap one and showed him this one and told him he’d be able to use it so he was happy with that.

He said he’s looking for a wall hanger. Which stainless makes sense I have quite a few carbon steel swords and they will rust if not maintained . As long as he knows they are not for actual use .
