My laser dryfire set up.

Thought I'd move this over from the original thread so it would get some more views.

At the moment I'm testing the "crackshot app" for some dryfire practice. The app is designed to run on your phone and to be projected on to a projector. I have a theater setup in the basement, and decided to give it a go. While trying to use the phone is a royal pita being mounted in a tripod, and my aging eyes have a hard time seeing the phone to begin with, I decided to run the app on my PC using an Android emulator, and webcam. I'm still testing with various lighting, camera, and projector settings, it does work.

Right now I have 2 9mm laser trainer bullets and use them in the 229, and Beretta in double action. Have a 12 gauge trainer on the way, and also an AR resetting trigger laser on the way.

Here's the preliminary results using the sig at a 20' distance.

Probably busier than normal with the ammo shortage lol. When I went to buy the 9mm laser cartridges they were sold out. The 12 gauge for my mossy should be in soon.

I have this all working pretty well now. Here's a video of the other ranges and targets in the app.

Installed the sirt ar15 bolt today. Wasn't sure it was going to work with my timney trigger, but it does. Funny thing is the sirt trigger feels damn close to my 3lb timney, that's a plus for me.

I'm seriously considering buying an optic equipped sccy cpx to add to the collection as it's a double action only, so I can get some pistol red dot practice in. They can be had for $300 or so with the optic.

Now my basement is a perfect setup for something like this. If it was smaller, or setup in the same small room, I can see it being a pain to get calibrated correctly, or balancing the correct amount of light to see what your doing.

This is a shot of the projector room with the phone tripod. Phone mounts to tripod, and a cable runs to my a/v receiver.

This is where I shoot from. Plenty of lighting back here to see. I'm about 25' from the targets.


And this is the the PC I use. I'm running team viewer on the PC to remotely control the phone and simulation in the other room.


All together it works out really well.

I finally downloaded crackshot and tried it with the iPad today. Need to work on the calibration as its not so great for precision. Quick way though to work on draws from holster through. For the price, it has potential I think.

Thanks to this thread I picked up the Crackshot apps, a mini projector w/ screen and tripod, and the biggest purchase - a SIRT pistol. I don't have any DA guns and didn't want to have to re-rack after each shot. I did pick up a laser cartridge though so I could still practice with my carry guns. Eventually I'd like to get the MantisX AR laser bolt, but that'll be a while.

No pictures yet, I'm still setting up how I like it (but really just look at @Jem45472 's setup). My issue right now is I just upgraded the lights in the basement, and I'm only using a "mini" projector (to pair with iPhone) so the screen isn't very bright. I did find the calibration to be off, as I don't think it is the SIRT. There is a very slight delay between me firing and app detecting - maybe a quarter of a second. I was connecting to the projector via WiFi, I'll try a cable as that may work better.

I wish you could navigate the app menus with the laser, similar to VR games. I have a normal sized iPhone and it's annoying to navigate the menu with my fingers.

Calibration is kind of a pain, and even when set, I find it off the more you go to the edges. The steel poppers work very well for me.

It also helps to turn down any red settings on the projector. I haven't updated to the newest version. I see some comments about people having issues calibrating.

You also need to be sure camera is square to screen. I had to lift my phone and tripod up on an end table.

Also, im sure wifi will give you a little lag. Mines connected directly.

I know someone who just picked these up. I know the MantisX Blackbeard is still relatively new but it definitely looks like a nice piece of training gear. Whatever AR you use the Blackbeard in, it maintains the real trigger reset for that AR, which is a nice feature.

I ended up buying the sirt ar bolt. Was going to get the mantis, but didn't like the reviews I've seen on them.

Really? I've heard the opposite - the MantisX Blackbeard seems to be better from the little research I've done.

It’s relatively new and there are not a ton of YouTube videos of it. There is that one YouTube video where the reviewer had one that stopped working properly. I agree that it sucks, but no company is perfect and are bound to have faulty pieces. They have good customer service and did say they would fix the faulty one. The people that I have spoken with that have used it say it’s been great.

I agree, the Blackbeard is the better one to have- if it has no reliability issues. I think I saw 3 reviews saying trigger reset quit working, which turned me off.

I’ve been less than happy with crackshot and trying to get it to calibrate, so I went back to shootoff. I need to play with some of the sensitivities but for me and my projector setup, it’s working better than crackshot. The video is of a steel challenge setup, using the Sirt AR bolt at a distance of ~25 feet.
