New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell Claims Not Enough Time for a Mandatory Evacuation

This seems a little odd to me. Citing the time it takes to implement contra-flow traffic as a problem, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell stated there is not enough time for the city of New Orleans to execute a mandatory evacuation. Additionally, she is asking all residents who do not evacuate to shelter in place for Hurricane Ida.


Contra-flow traffic is the process of turning inbound lanes into outbound lanes and depending on the metropolitan area takes around 8 hrs for local and state DOT to get set up. The mayor is asking for a voluntary evacuation saying “time is not on our side.” “The City can not issue a mandatory evacuation because we do not have time, Cantrell continued. WATCH:

The forecasted landfall of what is expected to be Hurricane Ida is leading Amtrak to temporarily suspend service to and from New Orleans.




Sunset Limited: Effective today (August 27), Train 2 from Los Angeles will terminate in San Antonio instead of New Orleans. Train 1 will originate in San Antonio on Sunday (August 29) and Tuesday (August 31) as to return to Los Angeles. No substitute transportation is available between New Orleans and San Antonio.

Hell, that's all I'm asking for, no pay, I'll even bring my own gun and ammo. In the end, I volunteered for the big frolic in the desert, only one stipulation, I get to go back to my old unit, and they said I was too old then, HAH, at that time I was maxing the Army PT test three, four times a week, so Its all empty talk on my part anyway. I'll stay home and keep a lookout for Sgt. Bulldyke and her band of merry marauders while you guys go have fun and get free cig's and stuff.

I call bs on this. After Katrina, the Department of Homeland Security initiated UASI (Urban Area Security Initiative) and gave grants to metro areas across the country to develop and practice mass evacuations. I guarantee you that New Orleans received massive UASI grants.
I was on UASI for a department and helped to develop the template to evacuate metro Atlanta. There were hundreds of agencies and thousands of people involved in developing the template. We then practiced it on a tabletop exercise that lasted 7 days.
There is an evacuation plan for New Orleans. If they won’t initiate it, they should lose all the Federal grants they got under UASI.

Katrina was 16 years ago (almost to the day). Since then, $10s of billions have been spent to correct /improve infrastructure, equipment, and training to deal with what is a normal, recurring event, and the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana still cannot cope.
