High-earners are learning what tax experts have known for years: Tax collectors in states like New York make it really hard to leave. Wealth managers and tax lawyers say many of their clients are staying put after hearing about the scrupulous records they would have to keep to show they’ve really uprooted their lives and severed ties with their former states -- and that it’s not as easy as just spending a few more days a month in a Florida vacation home.
Like other high-tax states, New York’s Department of Taxation and Finance will go to great lengths to keep wealthy residents on their tax lists. The states’ methods can be aggressive: Issuing subpoenas to pore through credit card statements, bank transactions or phone records to track a taxpayer’s location, and sending auditors to interview doormen or confirm doctors’ appointments.

Realistically what can they really fucking do? You live in another state, for real. They can't decide to tax residents that don't live there.

If they have a problem with it, they can take it up with the state of Texas when I move there. I'm sure they'll laugh it the fuck off and tell them to shove it up their liberal asses.

I think it's only hard on rich people who want to live part time in FLA and enjoy what NY has in the summer. IF people cut the ties completely, the taxation department nazi's and the furher can't do anything but import some illegals to replace a person on the census roles

What would happen if a few multiple thousands of high earning expat New Yorkers took the tax money that NYS thinks they are entitled to and set up a legal defense fund to fight this shit? Suppose a few multiple thousands of captive New Yorkers joined them? Suppose there was a full scale tax revolt? Suppose upstate said FU to NYC and started charging market electrical and water rates?
