My son got one for a tail light up here by me. He lives in Staten Island. He had it fixed he was able to go into the local pct down there near him with just the receipt from the repair and show the desk sgt and it was squashed right there on the spot, no court, no fees.

The reason is yes, they have show activity. A headlight is one that is fixable and it is dangerous just have one headlight.
Cops look for those because people can just get it fixed and not pay a fine . And they show activity
I do miss this..... I keep my badge in the truck, means a lot less here though. I have it in a small compartment, right on top of my insurance card.... Just in case.
Not any more dangerous than a motorcycle with one headlight.
My issue with all of this, cops just screwing with the public because they can. Sure, I have pulled people over in the past for little things like this, many times, I would light them up, pull along side and tell them the issue. No harm, no foul.
I was reminiscing early today with my brother and the police thing came up. He just returned from a 3 week holiday in Poland. he said in the 3 weeks that he was there, not once did he see the police pulling over a car, their police go after crime, not infractions of their own people.
We got talking about living in Germany, it was rare there to see people getting lit up over the most minor of things.
Imagine of the police in the US would stop fucking with the citizens and go after the cancer of crime in the US?
Most, tagging people for minor infractions, is the easiest way to make it through a shift. Many cops today in the US are not fit to take out garbage, let alone wear the uniform.

Last weekend I made a 1900 mile round trip across 5 states. Yes, traversing NY was nearly a 1/3 of the trip but there was farm more LE presence on NY interstates than anywhere else.

Virginia is just as bad as NY. Those are the only 2 states I have been through that feel like you are being hunted.
I drove across the top part of Mississippi yesterday. Google maps alerted a speed trap every few miles. Not a single cop car anywhere. They must have one patrol guy with a dark sense of humor running up and down the highways reporting himself.

Maybe you just couldnt see them? I dont think I know anybody who got pulled over for speeding who's first thought when they get lit up not being "damn, where'd he come from"

If I am paying taxes, why is there a court fee? If I challenge the "crime" and win, why doesn't the cop have to pay court costs? Well, probable cuz we have a corrupt system. The founders never meant for this kind of shit to happen.

Doubtful Mississippi put cloaking technology in their HP vehicles. I was looking for them, but nobody was there. The alert probably popped up 20 times.
Cops driving down the highway reporting speed traps every few miles is likely more effective at slowing traffic down than writing tickets.

You are thinking from the point of view of the person driving the car. A second party might think it is a motorcycle and turn or move in front of that part that is not behind the working headlight. And yes, I have seen more than one MVA with that as the cause. A misjudging of the distance.

I just did home to STL last Monday and then back on Friday. Ohio was the absolute worst on both trips. Waze saved may ass a couple times.
If a person turns or moves into the opposite lane while traffic is approaching, regardless of what kind of traffic they think it is, they should be arrested and lose their license.
I can't tell you how many times I've almost been in a head-on collision because some self-important jackass moved into my lane to get around a garbage truck or bus. These pricks actually think people will give way for them.
Kind of makes me want to get a big beater truck with a heavy steel bumper. But then I would likely be the one arrested even though the other person broke the law.
And why aren't the cops pulling these people over? I've seen this happen right in front of cops and they blithely go on their merry way.

I was thinking more of pedestrian crossing the street or just someone opening their car door to get out of their car.
But a car turning onto a residential two way street could easily clip a car with one headlight without any criminality involved.
Or better yet. Staying on the side of the road with your lights on for 20 minutes after the pour soul you pulled over for a license plate light out has already left and backing up traffic for 10 miles with liberal city idiots who don’t know about the “ move over” law,(AKA cut everyone off no matter what for disabled/emergency vehicles) thus for backing up traffic for another 10 fucking miles

You can thank the anti cop movement for that. Cops have paperwork ( actually on the computer now) on top of the ticket issued to fill out . And they want it filled out before the cop leaves the scene unless there is special reason not to do so then.

TLDR - Setting speed traps is not a good look for LE.
Here local to me a Trooper parks (hides) his car between a small business and some big bushes. I don't really have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is that the place he hides is right at the end of the village limits where the speed limit changes from 30 MPH to 55.
As motorists are naturally picking up speed at the very end of the 30 MPH speed zone leaving the village and coming up on the 55 MPH speed zone he nails them. Or visa versa, as in slowing down as they are entering the 30 MPH zone. The Trooper parks (hidden) so close to the 55 MPH road sign. It would literally be 10-12 steps away from him.
Just for clarity, there is not a school or houses or any other businesses at that location, in fact, except for that one business, both sides of the road are farm fields.
Way back in 1999 a Deputy got me at that very spot and he ticketed me for 43 in a 30. I was speeding up as I was approaching the 55 MPH speed zone. I mean I was probably at 43 MPH right where the 55 MPH road sign is. Who doesn't do that? Then to make matters worse, he made a failed attempt to start with the fishing bullshit...
Was I ultimately speeding? yes, I was. Is pulling the speed trap thing bullshit? Of course, it is.
Does that kind of shit reflect poorly on the department/agency? I think so, so doesn't the locals around here.
