NY Democrats Introduce Mandatory Trigger Pull Weight Bill

Seeing the clear positive impact of heavy triggers among the NYPD, New York Democrats are trying to mandate the same thing be done to every civilian firearm in the state.

The bill currently under consideration, S3444, is ostensibly designed to keep children under five years old from being able to operate a firearm. It demands that all firearms sold within the state include mechanisms to prevent children from firing the firearm. From the bill:

SUCH DEVICES OR MECHANISMS SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO: THE CAPACITY TO ADJUST THE TRIGGER RESISTANCE TO AT LEAST A TEN POUND PULL, THE CAPACITY TO ALTER THE FIRING MECHANISM SO THAT AN AVERAGE FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD’S HANDS ARE TOO SMALL TO OPERATE THE PISTOL OR REVOLVER, OR THE CAPACITY TO REQUIRE A SERIES OF MULTIPLE MOTIONS IN ORDER TO FIRE THE PISTOL OR REVOLVER.

At the moment there are five sponsors and co-sponsors of the bill, all Democrats: José M. Serrano, Jamaal Bailey, Liz Krueger, James Sanders Jr., and Daniel L. Squadron.

Normally the current state of the Senate would mean that this bill would be dead on arrival, with a majority of Republican Senators capable of blocking the Democrats. But as we saw with the NY SAFE Act the New York Republicans are about as reliable as La La Land winning Best Picture.

It's more than that, and contrary to popular belief, the hit rate of the NYPD is actually slightly higher than average amongst police departments. The real numbers are out there.

That said, I bought your .45 so I'd finally have a range gun with a normal trigger!

OTOH, is there anything that prevents them from putting the original disconnector/spring/etc in the box with your new gun ?

Would this be like the orange tips on airsoft guns, that are painted in watercolor so the end user can easily remove it ?

Or will this include long guns as well, and finally wake up al the FUDDS that this insanity will eventually come for them too ?

Because ultimately it is all about the voters, not the police as many like to argue...

If this becomes law, there will never once be an instance where a cop enforces it. It's an administrative law that will be "enforced" at the retail or manufacturers level. The "power" behind its enforcement is the power of the state to levy fines and rescind business permits.

You are correct, but ultimately all the power of the government comes from police.

What would be the consequences for a business owner who refused to pay those unconstitutional fines, and continued to do business after his license were revoked ?

Without cops, the government can be as draconian as it likes, it is all just paper.

No, it would increase murders.
Its a fact that thugs that use handguns have horrible aim and there are very few deaths compared to shots fired.
Knives and other edged weapons have a far higher mortality rate when used in violent attacks.
So if the thugs cant use guns, they will use weapons that are far more deadly than guns.

It would increase deaths. Children who pull the trigger become so preoccupied with pulling a heavy trigger that they stop thinking of what happens afterwards. So if they can't use their finger to pull the trigger they use both hands and their thumbs to pull it. That why you hear of so many children shooting themselves in the chest or head. To pull the trigger with they point the gun at themselves.

I love it! I'm taking it out again on Thursday. Loaded up 100 for it yesterday. I may tweak my load though as it doesn't seem to be accurate in this pistol. I've never played with a pistol loading before. I have always made them as basic and cheap as possible.

My first thought with these bills is that we're totally screwed if the Dems take the Senate. But...even in the Assembly where Dems have all the power, these types of proposals rarely make it out of committee. Are they just biding time, or do these things only have the support of the ultra-left, and no real backing with more centrist Dems?
