New York's attorney general on Friday recommended the New York Police Department get out of the business of routine traffic enforcement, a radical change she said would prevent encounters like one last year in the Bronx that escalated quickly and ended with an officer fatally shooting a motorist.

Attorney General Letitia James, who acts as a special prosecutor appointed to investigate certain police killings, argued that traffic stops for minor infractions often end in violence and that Allan Feliz’s death last October after he was pulled over for a seat belt violation “further underscores the need for this change.”

Apparently Its the police enforcing the law which leads to problems, not the peaceful criminals . If the police would just leave the criminals alone, We wouldn't have this problem .

It's like they heard the joke that "if nothing is illegal, the crime rate is zero" and didn't realize it was a joke.

In nyc its practically there already, its only the upstate commuters that get harrassed. Its the law of averages, most upstate commuters are going to be law abiding responsible people that will pay their tickets and likely not shoot the police.

Inner city hood rats (of any color) are more likely to cause trouble. As many know i work in the city and i see it all the time, i see people diving crazy on city streets right passed nypd and they dont give them a second look. And nevermind all the dirtbikes, quads, mopeds, etc.. that ride wheelies passed nypd, without helmets, license plates, or even headlights. These thugs will block vehicular traffic to allow all the rest of the thugs to get through traffic, do burnouts, wheelies, etc.. and nypd will be on the corner and do nothing about it.

Why just NY $hitty..eliminate traffic stops throughout the State...this is narrow thinking to a problem by them and again demonstrates their tunnel vision. A bandaid for an artery bleed when they could eliminate all law infractions(motor vehicle) and increase the positive crime percentage.

A State A.G. wants a local City P.D. (no matter how big they are) to stop, but hasn't stopped HER OWN State P.D. from doing the very same thing she discourages?

In these dystopian futures, there is always the need for "law"makers. Someone has to come up with the new crop of bullshit "laws" to further subjugate the masses. And their pet army will enforce them.

What will they ever do then about the loss of revenue from lack of traffic enforcement? Because we know that BS isn't in any way, shape, or form associated with "safety"...

I think the State and local municipalities answer is going to be enforcement by automation! Cuomo already budgeted monies previously for camera systems at all bridge & tunnel crossings for the purpose of driver identity (gateless toll scofflaws) and can see this as an easy way for them to collect huge $$$ without the "labor" component necessary for the enforcement interaction.
