WTB Old wall hanger for above fireplace

My wife surprisingly has kind of been talking about getting her pistol permit then the other day said I don't like the marine flags above the fireplace let's put an old gun up there. Wow I'd love to and by marine I mean water not marine corps. Don't want to offend anyone. So if anyone has something they sell relatively inexpensive I'd be interested. Anything around 1920 or before I'd consider. I'd prefer an old double barrel or flint lock. If possible something that does no need an FFl would be preferred. I think that would have to be pre 1898 or flintlock style. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on what does not need an FFl I do t want to break the law.

I think you can mail order blackpowder long guns and handguns without an FFL. You cannot have the parts needed to put a blackpowder handgun into service without it being on your license. You might be able to order a kit long gun and finish it yourself to keep costs as low as possible. Hanging a wood stocked rifle above your fireplace will probably dry out the wood pretty severely and weep out any oils or grease.

I thought about a crossed flintlock pistol and a cutlass as a finishing touch for my office behind the fireplace/ wood stove insert. Still a possibility. Or maybe an axe and halligan, or a nice brass fire hose nozzle and a 6 ft. hook! I've already got a couple of my old helmets and badges hanging around the office.

If you like doing stuff yourself, a black powder rifle kit is cheap and you can shoot it too, so its not just for looks.

Replica guns are relatively inexpensive and easy to come by.

Real flintlock guns tend to be a little more expensive, especially if they're in good shape. You can always check the auctions, as NY law allows muzzleloading firearms to be shipped to your door (local laws may prohibit this, I have no idea). I picked up a percussion cap musket made in the early 1800s that is in good shape. The SxS shotgun is definitely in rougher shape, but it's somewhere around 250 years old. I'd look at Rock Island Auction Company (they have some awesome guns), Hessney (Geneva, NY), or even gunbroker or other mass auction sites.

The biggest reason I'd steer you towards a real antique firearm is the story you get to tell. The musket that I bought was made in 1813, in Prussia. It was probably used in the Napoleonic wars, and then stored somewhere. Around 1840, it was converted from flintlock to percussion. When the US Civil War broke out, it was probably bought by the Union and imported into the US. Sometime after that, someone decided it was too heavy and chopped the front half of the stock off. You would never get to tell that story with a replica.

I just have a small ventless gas fireplace we use half a dozen times per year. I'm not really worried about the drying out issue. Also I would really like an antique since my house is old. Thanks for the ideas. I just wanted to buy something local if I could. Thanks boys.

Yeah not quite old enough. We will see what happens. It's an auction so I might not win. It's a pretty cool riffle and has some nice detailing. I will post some pics. It will be a week or so. The auction ends today. The guys locat d in PA sonshipping should not take too long.

I won the auction. I'm very happy and I like the detailing on the gun. I don't know much about the gun, but it's a decoration and considering complete fakes are $150-$175 I thought this was a descent price. If anyone knows anything about it I'd love to hear anything.

For the same price you could of bought a shooter that you could hang up above the fireplace and on occasion SHOOT!

I bought a nice 45 caliber flint lock rifle (a shooter) at a pawn shop last year for only $150. Perfect Pennsylvania deer hunting rifle, occasional shooter or a wall hanger.
Black Powders are fun to shoot, Weather they be pistol, rifle, cap lock or flint lock.

From the pictures it appears to be a smooth bore, with no full length picture to help with perspective and over all architecture, giving it a location of origin is difficult. The back action lock puts it, at the earliest, maybe 1840-50, possibly a New York gun. Is there is a name engraved on it somewhere it could possibly give an exact location and dates the smith worked in. Depending on condition of course, it could be a shooter. When you receive it, please check to make sure it does not have a load in it. With muzzleloaders this common safety procedure is commonly neglected even by experts, and many of these guns were used in home protection, loaded and ready to use. Pretty cool old gun.

I agree not too many details. Honestly I'm not to interested in shooting it. It fits the period of my house and the design I wanted. As long as it authentic I'm happy. I like to know as much about things as I can.
Also thank you so much about telling me about checking to make sure it's not loaded. I would not have thought of that honestly. I will look it over and post some more details when I get the gun

Congrats on the auction win. It looks pretty nice! Make sure to let us know if you find out more about the gun. If you need any help trying to figure out more about it, post up some pictures of any markings once you get it.

Excellent advice to see if it is loaded. Stuff the ramrod down there. Then, take it out and put it by the side of the gun to see how far it went down. You should be able to tell pretty easily.

You'll probably want to look up how to care for it. I've done a bit of research and it looks like Renaissance Wax is highly recommended. I guess it was created specifically for museums to protect their items. Keep your nose away from the can though, because it really smells. Once it's on the firearm and dries, it won't smell.
