possible for mag tube spring to crush shells loaded in it?

I have a new Mossberg 590 in .410, and I am noticing the PDX's I have loaded in there got all warped and bent. They don't reliably feed while in this condition. I loaded a few 3 inch 000 buck shells to test out different ammo when I wasn't sure what the feeding issue was, and then i noticed it looks like the 000 buck got crushed a little bit up top too.

Does anyone know if it is possible my magazine tube spring is too tight or strong? I have the same PDX's loaded in my KSG and they are not bent or crimped at the top.

Guns:

PDX Ammo, left one is normal, the rest are all warped after being loaded into the magazine and left for a couple of weeks:

000 Buck: you can see the bubbling and bending up top and that is only after like a minute in the tube (left one is normal)

This kinda sucks if I can't reliable load the shotgun with this expensive ass ammo I bought a ton of, what can I do about it crushing the shells???

Do they cycle and fire? That's the priority.

Next, are they being damaged while loading, or in storage. Try pinching one with your fingers with as much pressure as you have to push it into the loading gate. If the hand pressure doesn't deform the cases, it might be your loading technique.

Try loading one less shell and see what happens, that should reduce the pressure and show no damage if it's the spring. I kinda doubt it's the spring pressure and it would seem obvious as you load it.

First off I'd call Mossberg Customer Service and explain the problem, asking them for a recommendation, if that's no good, then I'd cut about three coils and go from there. It would also be a good idea to take the spring out, leave the follower in, then load the shells and measure the free space between the follower and the end cap, then comparing the fully compressed length.
If it were just one brand and flavor of shell it would be suspect, but two different Hulls points to the shotgun as the problem.

yes the black shells i posted a picture of are the 2.5 inch PDX1 Defenders......

right now i have hornady critical defense, 2.5 inch in there, will test cycling tomorrow

No they aren't cycling, it seems being bent is causing them to not catch the lifter..... sometimes i'll have to pump a few times hard to get it to rack, or i have to push the shell into the mag-tube with my finger a little bit to jimmy it into the spot to catch the lifter

i literally had those red 000 buckshot shells in the gun for like 30 seconds and u can see the crimping up top on the right 3 shells

I dis-assembled and cleaned the gun today too (didnt touch mag-tube spring though)

Looks to me your only loading 5 rounds and information says the tube holds 6 that I saw plus one in the chamber. This seems wrong to me. I will say many only hold full capacity at 2.5” shells even though the chamber is for 3” shells. I would take apart the magazine tube to ensure there isn’t a foreign object or a plug inserted that’s broken. My shotgun came with the plug inserted from the factory. If nothing is found from this I would call mossberg but before calling I would look at the spring g length online and the other parts involved to ensure I knew what was supposed to be there vs what is actually there. Something is wrong and this should be remedied. I can’t imagine the spring alone is that tight to crush them and you can insert the shells without issue. I would think it would be very difficult to i see the shells if the spring was crushing them but logically the spring crushing them makes sense. Odd and post what it is when you remedy it.

The problem is obviously with the gun. Call Mossberg and talk to a CS tech. Tell them what's going on. It wouldn't surprise me if they said something along the lines of " Yeah, you're not the first. We recently became aware of this problem. We can send you the new spring or you can send us the gun for repair." My guess is that they got a batch of faulty springs, either too stiff or too long and they will issue a recall as soon as they figure it out. Good luck.

the problem is def the the mag-tube spring, it smashes the shells when it is full, but when i load it with 1 less shell, they don't get smashed. I don't know what to do, might take to gun store over weekend and see if someone can look at it

That just plain isn't right. Send it to Mossberg ASAP, you cannot rely on it.

it is the KSG410. It is sweet, NY State legal. Holds 14 rounds. Really tiny too, same size as shockwave i think, 26 inches long and 5lbs. It is just considered a regular pump shotgun, not an "other" b/c the barrel is still 18.5 inches
