The only thing that makes any sense to me about this, is that Putin has information ( good or bad, real or not) that some type of planned coup is supposed to take place in Damascus, Because of this ""threat"" he can bolster fighters , troops and anti aircraft in Syria . otherwise Im not really sure why he would say something like that for no reason .Possibly to say to the people of Russia that after he put Russian troops in Syria the cowardly Americans would not dare to attack thereby winning favor by standing up to the Bullies in the US and come out of a bad situation looking like a winner.

A coup would be orchestrated by the Russians in order to succeed...and what happens after ? The people are starving and without shelter...so the red cross and others come in only to be robbed by the new regime that still kills it's own....cycle II

Right now Russia only has a few allies and they depend on Russia,not Russia on them...Russia saves face by getting rid of the chemical bomber and also could get sanctions removed for good behavior...plus they just put another pro Russian pawn in place..win/win

Pretending there is a strain in relations is a win win for Trump. Eventually they will come to an agreement and Trump will take the credit for a new detente. It doesn't cost Putin a dime to play along.
