Question on Winchester '92 carrier

I have a pre-64 '92 that has a weird situation where what I believe is called the "carrier" will not load the round properly it wants to teeter-taughter instead of remaining rigid allowing the round to chamber, when the lever action is activated.

I am a bit intimidated to just jump in on this one w/o guidance, to me Luger field stripping is child's play compared to these old lever actions.
