Recommend me a bag

ok...my old get home bag has seen better days and it's time to pass it along. This bag usually sits in the cab of my work truck stocked with what I think I would need if I needed to walk home (approx 30 miles). The old bag carried food, water, fire making supplies, extra gloves, extra socks, extra hat, some shelter making supplies, a couple of knives, spare ammo for my EDC etc etc etc.

SO what's everyone recommendations?
The truck is a Nissan Frontier extended cab so the bag shouldn't be as big as a frame style pack but also be big enough to accommodate a days hike

Anyways, I just have a $25 backpack from Kmart, its done me well for a few years.

+1 for Kelty. I've got a bunch of their gear, and I love it. I have 3 Kelty backpacks. (I'm a camping gear whore, don't judge me )

I agree with staying away from the tactical look. There is no need to draw attention to yourself.

I've had a Redwing 2650 (~44l) for years. It's old enough where it predates the switch from cubic inches to liters as a way to measure backpack volume. It is about 13 or 14 years old now, and still going strong. If you can find a used one, it would probably fit your needs.


A while back, a squirrel ate through the bottom panel to get to some trail mix that I left in the bag. I emailed Kelty and they said that they couldn't repair it. To "make up for it" they gave me a 50% off one item + free shipping coupon. I bought a new backpack and had my local cobbler replace the bottom panel for something like $30. A few weeks later, someone from Kelty emailed me back saying that they could probably fix my backpack if I wanted to send it in. Kelty's customer service is awesome. I've had great customer service from pretty much all camping/hiking companies though.

Not in the $40 price range, but i have been using a 511 pack for several years. It's well worth the extra $$.

My backpack I use for hunting is a cheap priced brand I have had it for 15+ years. Left it in tree-stands over night, rain, snow etc...many times. Very quiet, soft and durable, has 5 pockets including the large open area. It has been to hell and back, still solid new ..

I also like the non-tac pack suggestion. As NF said, no need to draw attention. Comes more into play when you're traveling. No need to come off like an operator or someone that foreign people should be paying attention to. The idea is to blend in. If I was out picking on people for supplies, I'd target baller bags first. They'll be harder to get (because guns), but they'll have more of the shit I want.

I got a free backpack from the DoHS for a class I took, I'm currently using that. I plan on getting something a little bigger/better, but for now it works. I'd go with a good old school backpack. Laptop bags are built to carry the weight, keep water out, and usually hold a lot of stuff. Some even have pouches for water bladders. See them at Staples, Target, LLBean, etc. Built to haul shit around campus all day and look inconspicuous.

Mine is a little different considering that it's a response bag, but I have other things in my bag in addition to what is pictured below. Mine is more like the bottom 2 examples.

Bag came with a wrench for turning off gas mains, tape, a light (which I threw out and added my own), first aid supplies (band aids, gauze, aspirin, cpr mask, etc), water, vest, gloves (which I upgraded to something heavier duty than the ones pictured), goggles, helmet, paper/pencil, and some other stuff. I've since added a bivvy, matches, protein bars, a multi-tool, and maps. I keep adding to it, throwing in a thing every other month or so. Will probably add in some water tablets just in case, an extra knife (I always have my small edc folder on me, but another one can't hurt), and possibly a box of ammo.

My wife made a bag (on her own) that was originally in an older laptop bag. Had it packed with all sorts of shit: thread/needles, tampons, water, wind-up radio, batteries, kids games, etc. Eventually transitioned to a bag like this that she got at Target for cheap:

Simple and effective, gets the job done, holds all your shit. Whenever we need them, we'll have a few bags to carry, but we'll have a wide range of stuff to take that is already packed. It's nice to have different people pack bags so you get different ideas. I might not think about things that she'll need and she might not think of things that I could use, but they'll help us both.

tactical tailor urban operator pack...aside from the name it is pretty inconspicuos...they can be had pretty cheap on amazon
