OTOH, I think hairdressers, interior decorators, and kindergarten teachers need rifles too, so maybe I'm not the guy to ask....
We used to have Colt 9mm subs where I worked for special situations. After qualifying with them for many years, I can't help but think that the average LEO would be better served by having a carbine as a primary weapon rather than a pistol. Carbines are easier to shoot accurately and their magazines generally hold more ammo.

Totally agree LEO has no need for Rifles.
Who knows. M1 carbines were definitely used by PD's back in the day.
I am not issued a rifle, but since my kids' school is less than a mile from my precinct I keep my own in my car. If anything happens there I'm going in with my own stuff and don't care what anyone thinks or does afterwards.
Not SWAT trained. Our boys in black (SORT) had HK's...we peons were relegated to M16-A2's and then the Colt Subs for special occasions.

Yes but did they really use them on full auto other than screwing around in training? I can't imagine them training for real sceanrios using full auto which is what I got from your post.

I can't tell you what the SORT boys (and one girl, former Army D.I.) did during training. They were the darlings of Executive Staff and had a pretty decent budget, so I wouldn't be surprised if they trained full auto. I trained 3 round burst with the Colt Sub initially and then qualifications thereafter were semi-auto...of course someone always fired a few bursts screwing around each year and those pretty boys screwed around much more than us

You're looking at that exactly backwards. If you guys can have it, then it is "in common use" and it isn't "dangerous and unusual" so it is illegal to prohibit the rest of us from having it.
Obviously they need some kind of rifle. The point is to penetrate body armor. I guess you could limit them to safe act compliant rifles, but honestly I don't care about that. Two wrongs don't make a right, we'd simply be making more people comply with stupid laws when we should simply be fighting to have them removed.
I specified NON duty, because i assume they're generally issued whatever their department buys.

For you, or anyone else, who thinks it is about privilege for an officer to have a certain gun at work goes beyond ignorant. Ok, I agree there's not really a point for non-duty to have any rifle they want. The only positive is that it could be used for arguing against the Safe act for the responsible ownership of 'assault weapons' since they are citizens like the rest of us after all.
