Probably semantics but, Smith and Wesson never made a model 49 in stainless.
The 649 is the stainless version that came out in 1985.

That’s not stainless, it appears to be a refinish in hard chrome. As I said, the 49 was never made in stainless.
Simpler than that. It's Nickel plated. That's correct that no 49 was made in stainless, but factory Nickel , yes.
What that means for this thread.. I dunno. That's for you to decide @Brawny71.

It certainly could be nickel, but I’m still leaning refinished in hard chrome. Which is a great finish for a carry/shooter.
The brush marks, the way the side plate fits and the roll marks…say refinish to me. I am pretty new to collecting Smiths though so I very well could be wrong.
