Y'all got some long-ass thumbs to have it in that hole while gripping the mag. Good catch, though. Let's say we fill that hole ...
The orange version is, indeed, ugly as sin, but I kinda like the blued/wood one.
If you filled that hole then it would be compliant. However since it has no grip, magazine changes would be extremely difficult.

You can put your thumb in it, ergo thumb hole. Of course, it's completely irrelevant that you could not possibly operate this pug-ugly piece of machinery with a grip that would place your thumb in the hole. Well, not safely...
Magazine changes should be easy, since you're already holding the magazine. Keep your support hand on the front end and the butt on your shoulder, then release the mage with your strong-hand thumb.
The magazine, once inserted, is the grip. As such, you don't have to have a long trigger finger at all (or were you continuing the thumb-in-the-hole discussion?)Gotta have one hell of a long trigger finger just to reach the trigger
Semi-serious question: if you designed a different, less ugly rifle with the same concept -- a magwell with a trigger guard attached, but no pistol grip; the magazine being the de facto grip when inserted -- would that be compliant?

I'm unclear on this concept. The hole is where you insert a "gun" to steady the "rifle" while you change magazines? Combining pleasure and business?
I still think the magazine would be considered a pistol grip making it illegal. The good news is if you get caught with such an ugly gun they will probably let you go because they pitty you.

you could then shorten the barrel and call it a pistol if you take the stock off since the mag is "inside" the grip.

In essence, it's halfway between a standard rifle and a bullpup. Instead of putting the action/mag all the way behind the grip, as in a bullpup, the action is over the "grip" (which is the magazine.) You would get something shorter than a standard rifle, but not as short as a bullpup, and probably easier to load than a bullpup.

That is simply a skeletonized stock. After all, if you put your thumb through that stock, there is no anatomical way that a real human could reach the trigger with that hand.
In essence, this is no different in function than something like this:
