Sanctuary City’ officials, advocates jittery about Trump
November 14, 2016
Illinois Democrat Congressman Mike Quigley indicated to the Chicago Tribune that he is worried President-elect Donald Trump may follow through on his campaign promise to cut off federal funding to so-called “sanctuary cities” that ignore federal immigration law.
Quigley said something many sanctuary critics might find remarkably shallow: “The president-elect said he would cut off all federal funding to sanctuary cities — an extraordinary thing to say, particularly for someone who says the federal government should stay out of the local governing of states and cities.”
That’s hardly extraordinary. What better way for the federal government to stay out of local government than to withdraw federal money? Traditionally, if the feds spend a nickel anywhere, they want a dollar’s worth of control. With no money in the pot, the federal government can clear whatever conscience it has and let cities swim or sink on their own.
