School sponsored active shooter training

Yesterday, students didn't have school cuz the teachers got to role play active shooter situations. It was an eye opening experience for all. It started with general things you can expect throughout the ordeal, then delved into actual scenarios where we had to react to certain situations and learn from them. Before that though, they fired numerous blanks from a sheriff's duty gun in various spots in the school as we sat in the library where the training was held. This was the first time most of the individuals had ever heard a gunshot in person, let alone inside a building. It was helpful to actually hear what the reports sounded like depending on where you were and how far away the shots were. I'll post more about the scenarios when i have more time to elaborate on each, and hopefully get some thoughts on my take of them.

It was neat. And i was thinking the same thing about how pathetic it is that we even have to address this crap.

One of the scenarios was that we were in a classroom while an active shooting situation started and we had to prevent him from getting into our unlocked room. Our room was the only one where he couldn't gain access. We used a belt to hook around the door handle and to a table leg that was wider than the door. Most of our doors open outward. The lady "playing" the teacher did a great job. Oddly enough, she is a staunch Republican.

Agreed. I just started a job where active shooter is a significant risk. A stout leather belt around the arm of the door closing mechanism can be a good tool to secure the door closed as well.

I'm cool to the efficacy of this kind of training and genuinely wonder if it does more harm than good, inviting traumatic experiences and anxiety into people who most likely will never hear gunfire of any sort outside of hunting season or a gun range. 50 school shootings/year over 100k schools means in a given year your school has about a 1/2000 chance of being victimized by one. And most are very small one-off type things for which this training does nothing.

At this point there should be some evidence as to how this is or isn't effective. Does it exist?

Yup. Area denial in a mass shooter scenario is a very successful strategy. Lights out. Shut up. Deny targets.
