Shomrim leader looks for plea deal in NYPD corruption probe

A Brooklyn Shomrim patrol leader accused of paying NYPD cops cash bribes in order to expedite gun permits is in talks with feds over a plea deal, lawyers said Friday.

Manhattan federal court Judge Sidney Stein gave prosecutors and the defense three weeks to hammer out a possible agreement for Alex “Shaya” Lichtenstein, who was busted in April for paying cops as much as $1 million to keep the scheme going.

“We have been in continuous discussions about the resolution of the case,” said Assistant US Attorney Russell Capone.

It's amazing I have not heard a peep from any anti-gun group or politician in New York City except the Public Advocate. Outside of that, Everytown for Gun Safety said:

You have no idea what you are talking about. It was a cop who blew the whistle on this.
The DA is the one who prosecuted and they love to prosecute cops so they can get elected or notch on their belt as a corruption fighter even if they know a cop is innocent.
In the past hidsidics would get special treatment such as a desk appearance tickets instead going thru the system or reduced charges or no charges because of their political power. However it is not evident in this case so far

NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Harrington and Deputy Inspector James Grant Charged With Accepting Bribes In Exchange for Official Acts

Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Diego Rodriguez, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), and William J. Bratton, Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (“NYPD”), announced today that Deputy Chief MICHAEL HARRINGTON, Deputy Inspector JAMES GRANT, and Sergeant DAVID VILLANUEVA of the NYPD were arrested this morning, along with a Brooklyn-based man, JEREMY REICHBERG, on bribery charges.

HARRINGTON, GRANT, and REICHBERG were charged in Manhattan federal court with conspiring to commit honest services wire fraud for a bribery scheme involving the receipt of tens of thousands of dollars in meals, trips, home renovations, and other benefits in exchange for an array of official NYPD actions, including private police escorts, ticket fixing, and assistance in settling private disputes. VILLANUEVA, formerly a supervisor in the NYPD’s gun licensing division, was charged in Manhattan federal court with bribery offenses in connection with his receipt of cash bribes to expedite and approve gun licenses.

In addition, the guilty plea of Police Officer RICHARD OCHETAL, who formerly worked in the gun licensing division, was unsealed today. OCHETAL pled guilty to accepting bribes in exchange for the approval of gun license applications, and is cooperating with the Government in the investigation.
