Shotgun Storage

Hi everyone, new member here, so please bear with me.

I currently one own a single 12GA, and while I don't have any immediate plans to expand, I said the same thing with woodworking tools and now have a mini shop in my garage .

I was wondering what I should use for secure storage? I was looking at gun safes, but that seems like complete overkill for what I have now. So, I was hoping to get some input on what others who are in, or were in, my situation did?

Safes are dangerous...once you buy one you buy more guns until you fill it up.

seriously though I’d say how you secure a single shotgun really depends on your living arrangement, if others, especially kids could get access to it. If your single and live alone a decent gun lock may be sufficient but with others or kids I’d recommend it being in a locked closet, locked mental gun cabinet or gun safe.

Who/what are you trying to secure the firearm from? Kids, theft, fire? Do you own or rent? Will you be expanding your gun collection (rhetorical question... ).

Mainly from kids, once they get old enough for it to matter(at least 5 years down the line). I own, and as of now..no plans to expand..but who knows.

I could probably swap out a door knob on a basement closet for a lockable knob, and that could be a pretty decent intermediate solution, but a bit of a pain to deal with. I'll def take that into consideration, thanks. I was looking for a small lockable metal case for the gun itself as well, but haven't had any luck finding those just yet.

That's also something that is worth considering.

Lock up the Ammo in metal cans !

If your only concern is unauthorized people firing your weapon, this will do.

Are you going to be able to access your gun, unlock whatever you have on there and load it if not already loaded as your heart is racing and the foot steps are coming up your stairs? Just something to think about. Find a balance between keeping away from children and having it ready so it can do what it needs to do.

I have a friend who got married and had a bunch of kids. His wife won’t let him carry except for rare occasions - definitely not in or around the house. I always tease him and ask if his guns are unloaded, taken apart and locked up for “safety”. I’m sure an intruder will wait on the door mat for him to get ready. Poor guy. Should have wore a condom.
