Back in the day, there were a lot of good, high paying jobs there. You had 3 huge industrial employers producing aluminum products due to the cheap power allocation: GM Central Foundry, Reynolds Metals, and ALCOA. I am pretty sure all of them are no longer there. Even with almost free power, - and even state tax subsidies in excess of $100K per employee, they just wouldn't stay open in NY.Massena is a weird town The only reason it's not a ghost town yet is because of the reservation. A friend of mine is an EMT there, and hates it, the town is overrun by drugs.

I called on businesses in Massena for 40+ years- a tiny ass little town in the middle of nowhere in the idyllic Adirondacks. And it is too fucking cold up there to do anything but try to survive the winter.
Now just another small upstate NY town with gun violence! I would not be surprised if it turned out that this was somehow related to the illegals and the drug running, as Massena is one of the few border crossings with Canada in upstate New Yorkistan across the St. Lawrence.
Massena is most assuredly not “in the middle of nowhere in the Adirondacks.” It is right up against the St Lawrence River and the Canadian border. It is in the sane state as the Adirondacks, though. And it’s sort of small, but much bigger than many towns in that entire part of the state. Well over 12,000 people.
