It amazes me that anyone would shoot at movement or sound. It also amazes me that anyone will go into the woods during the regular season with out orange on, the article doesn't say but I would bet the father wasn't wearing any. This is a heartbreaking story that could have been avoided with common sense and folks should learn from these incidents but sadly to many do not.

I was walking in the woods for an afternoon hunt when I was about 15 with my father. A deer was running through the pine trees as we walked in. I had a shot, but could not tell if it was a doe or buck. I had no doe permit so I did not shoot. All the sudden we hear boom, boom, boom 7 shots. The guy at the top of the hill was eating lunch and saw it. He let 7 rounds fly. Illegal yes. It was the first time I ever heard my dad say the f word. I was a few feet away, but he actually heard bullets flying by his head. We crotched and his behind a tree. He had no fun and I remember saying dad you want me to fire a few back. He of course said no just stay down.
REALLY sad. Kid accidentally shoots-kills his dad.
It's more than just being able to pull the trigger. Know/ identify your target.
I hunt on state land. You can "never" be too careful. You never know what happy trigger / unexperienced hunter is in the woods with you.
When I was young, I recall coming out of the woods with my dad and seeing a lot of Law enforcement activity by edge of the road. My dad inquired as to why the huge police presence. A State Trooper said a hunter was loading his rifle (Marlin 336) while walking behind his friend into the woods before sunrise, tripped and shoot his friend in the back- killing him on the spot.

Yes, it sucks for the kid and his family but it is negligence plain and simple

Good reason to allow NV (and IFF patches) while hunting. Level 3 or 3+ plate might have stopped a .270 and saved his life. But where to stop? Helmet? I don't know. Tragic in any case.

While this is tragic; it should have never occurred. My god man, look for a target prior to shooting. Deer and men DO NOT LOOK THE SAME!!!

While past legal shooting light, it was only 9 minutes after official sunset. Lots of people are still shooting at that time.
This is why we ALWAYS tell other hunters in our group where we are going to be hunting. Everyone knows exactly where everyone else is.

That sucks, i feel real bad for that family. Completely avoidable, but terrible nonetheless.
