Thread Protector Question

I'm in the process of making one of my uppers set up for featureless. I just got off the phone with one of my old neighbors who has almost the same upper (his is rifle length mine's a mid) and used the same thread protector I ordered. He let me know the thread protector will either be about 1/8" short without the crush washer and about 3/16" too long with the washer. So my question is if it's a pinch too short will it be an issue? The crown will stick out just that 1/8" but it doesn't seem like that should be a concern. Or add the washer and let it be a tad long?

Feedback would be appreciated.

It would be easy enough to shorten a bit with a file. A lathe would be really handy.

It should be permanently attached. And they don't tell you what permanently attached means. Honk honk!

If you're local to Orange County I could shorten it for you.

I'm about 4 maybe 5 hours north. I appreciate the offer though @kev74 . Yeah, the "make it permeant" issue. Solder paste and a heat gun, carefully. Makes a weld that isn't coming apart. The one a shop put on my 350L is a bit long and no issues. But I think I want this to look a little nicer.

I just ordered the washers.

Thought I moved the solder epoxy, but I didn't. All I have is blue Loctite and JB Weld. I know when I bought a complete rifle that shop used JB Weld, and when I had the cap put on the 350 upper he used JB Weld.




This little project has been sort of a pain. Cutting the bayonet lug off was probably the easiest part so far. The first thread protector I ordered, the company tried some grimy scam. The company sells though Amazon and has a site, so I figured going third party though Amazon would be fine. It was slated for a delivery yesterday. When I placed an order on Monday night, the tracking looked odd with the delivery date the same. Tuesday Morning, when I check status of overnight from Monday night order, it suddenly says the thread protector was delivered Monday morning. WTF! So I get on a chat with Amazon CS, who assure me it will be delivered on that day (Tuesday), as it was probably just an error with scanning, so I wait. Nothing. So I order an alternate item to be delivered this AM and then back to Amazon CS who promised the original item will be here in the mail yesterday. Mail comes and no thread protector. Back to CS. This time I tell them just look at the tracking, it was scanned a bunch of times to nowhere, and it was not delivered, not to me, not to my neighbors, not anywhere. Told them I took screenshots of the shady tracking. So the CSA comes back and says they will issue a refund. Fine.

Back up order for the thread protectors (got two and two crush washers for the same price, I just wanted one without the knurling) was here this AM already.

If we didn't have to neuter our rifles we wouldn't have to go through this shit!

Just a little update to this. A rep from the company contacted me apologizing about the item being lost and was going to ship a new one. I replied that Amazon was issuing a refund, I had already ordered a different item from another vendor and a replacement wasn't needed. The original thread protector, showed up last night. I send the rep a message letting him know and also included the screenshots of the wonky tracking scans and ask what he would like to do. A few hours later I check, and he replied he had already shipped a replacement before he saw the message, and to just keep them both, and he hoped I would leave a fair review of the item. I have to say, there aren't a lot of companies out there that would make this right in these times. Most would just be OK that a refund was issued and call it a day. It was actually a nice surprise.

So anyway, the thread protector I originally ordered is on and curing. I wanted that one as it is flush with the barrel diameter, since that thread protector is now a permanent part of the barrel if the gas block needs to be removed it still can be.

So, now I have two spares, two crush washers, a pack of peel washers, and another spare thread protector on the way. I'm not one for letting stuff collect dust, but these spare parts will go in a box and hopefully never have to be used.
