I thought when a person was in jail, they had no rights? I guess not.

I've never been in jail, so I have no clue how it all works.

The guards should not be abusing (taunting, harassing or physically abusing) the inmates. If an inmate attempts physical intervention of the guards duties then there is a reason to use necessary force restrain the inmate. Other than that the guards need not interact with the inmates.

In 1971 there was a study conducted where 24 students were selected to be inmates and guards. The study ceased when the guards became absorbed with their own power and started abusing the inmates.

I agree. If the article is true and the guy was simply sitting at a table minding his own business he didn’t deserve to be hit.

I am sure there is some background to this story. The mutt more than likely had some prior interaction with the CO. The CO used poor judgement and smacked the mutt in an open setting. There's some history between the two, I'll bet.

Granted the rule is Care, Custody and Control in a fair, firm and impartial manner. This "New Jack" wasn't on the job for very long. He didn't have enough time in to have hardened to the day to day bullshit the inmates can subject one to. I'll judge him and say, he probably wouldn't put up with much shit from someone on the street either. Difference is behind the wire he most likely felt empowered, felt he could get away with his actions. No matter what a mutt throws at ya, you have to maintain, stay cool and let the bullshit roll off your shoulders.
With some 25 years behind the wire, it wasn't always easy. I witnessed a few CO's dispense some jail house justice from time to time. Not saying it was right, but it was often understood.

Was plant utilities at a cookie cutter prison. Hated going inside. One day went inside with my cell phone, very long 5 minutes waiting for sally port to open and me to get outside.

Had a job promotion if I transferred to Auburn, passed on that. Took one at Butler instead.
