Trudeau has decided to move forward with his cap on nitrogen emissions by reducing fertilizer use even as provincial Agriculture Ministers beg him to stop.

As per a Government of Saskatchewan news release, both the Alberta and Saskatchewan Ministers of Agriculture have expressed “profound disappointment” in Trudeau’s decision to attempt to reduce nitrogen emissions from fertilizer.

“We’re really concerned with this arbitrary goal,” Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture David Marit said. “The Trudeau government has apparently moved on from their attack on the oil and gas industry and set their sights on Saskatchewan farmers.”

As previously reported by The Counter Signal, in December 2020, the Trudeau government unveiled their new climate plan, with a focus on reducing nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. That plan is now coming into effect — though the government refuses to acknowledge that nitrous oxide emissions can be reduced without reducing fertilizer use.

And indeed, according to a report from Fertilizer Canada:

Total Emission Reduction puts a cap on the total emissions allowable from fertilizer at 30% below 2020 levels. As the yield of Canadian crops is directly linked to proper fertilizer application this creates a ceiling on Canadian agricultural productivity well below 2020 levels….
It is estimated that a 30% absolute emission reduction for a farmer with 1000 acres of canola and 1000 acres of wheat, stands to have their profit reduced by approximately $38,000 – $40,500/ annually.
In 2020, Western Canadian farmers planted approximately 20.8 million acres of canola. Using these values, cumulatively farm revenues from canola could be reduced by $396M – $441M on an annual basis. Wheat famers could experience a reduction of $400M.

Moreover, Fertilizer Canada doesn’t believe that forcibly decreasing fertilizer use will even lower greenhouse gases but could lead to carbon leakage elsewhere.

OTTAWA — The federal government has proposed cutting farm nitrogen fertilizer usage 30 per cent by 2030 but says reductions on farmland will be voluntary. That’s raising eyebrows.

Opposition agriculture critic MP John Barlow (Conservative — Foothills) doesn’t believe it, predicting farmers won’t have a choice but to comply in the end.

“I think when you have Steven Guilbeault as the minister of Environment and Climate Change, who has been very public over the years on his animosity towards traditional agriculture and the family farm model, I think he looks at agriculture as the opposition,” the Alberta MP told Farmers Forum. “And with that eco-activist mentality of his, he does not suspect that such things as fertilizer reduction would be a voluntary measure.”

Prior to his ascension into the Trudeau cabinet, Guilbeault spent 20 years as one of Quebec’s highest profile environmental protesters. A belligerent opponent of Canada’s natural resources sector, he was arrested in 2001 after scaling Toronto’s CN tower to besmirch this country’s fossil fuel industry on behalf of Greenpeace.
Curtailing fertilizer usage by even 20% could cost Canadian grain and oilseed growers nearly $48 billion in lost sales because of lower yields over the next eight years, according to a study commissioned by Fertilizer Canada last year.

The new Agriculture and Agri-Food discussion paper repeats the assertion that Canadian agriculture emits 10% of this country’s greenhouse gases (GHGs). Nitrogen fertilizer is said to contribute by off-gassing nitrous oxide, which the paper claims is up to 298 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

The Trudeau Liberals have been talking about fertilizer cuts since December 2020, as part of the government’s pledge to radically reduce emissions below 2005 levels by 2030. The pledged overall greenhouse gas reduction was already a whopping 30% before Trudeau upped it to 45% before last fall’s COP24 conference “with no consultation,” Barlow pointed out.

“They make these announcements with no understanding of what agriculture’s already doing,” he complained. Farmers themselves argue that fertilizer is expensive and for that reason alone they don’t want to use more than they need.
“To assume that Canadian farmers and producers aren’t doing everything they possibly can to be more efficient, to protect their soil and water, just shows how tone-deaf they are, and the lack of knowledge they have about the modern practices of producers for decades,” Barlow said.

If they are going to reduce fertilizer usage I hope they are also going after golf courses, public grounds and residential use of fertilizers. Every time someone gets on their high horse to attack us evil farmers for pesticide and fertilizer use they seem to completely forget the other demographics that use them as well. Farmers are not using more chemicals than they have to. Chemicals cost money and using excess cuts into already thin profit margins. Joe lawyer in his uppity subdivision doesn’t give a damn how much fertilizer and chemicals cost for his lawn as long as it’s cleaner and greener than the neighbors. And golf courses can’t have weeds or poor looking grass when joe lawyer brings his lawyer buddies to play.

  Germany's biggest ammonia maker SKW Piesteritz and number four Ineos also said they could not rule out production cuts as the country grapples with disruption to Russian gas supplies.
• Ammonia plays a key role in the manufacturing of fertiliser, engineering plastics and diesel exhaust fluid. Its production also yields high-purity carbon dioxide (CO2) as a byproduct, which is needed by the meat and fizzy drinks industries.
