What is wrong him?? Spending $19.5 billion on going to Mars?When our debt is over $19 trillion? How are we every going to pay the debt off when our incompetent "leaders" would like to take a look around Mars while our country goes to hell?

I know that $19.5 billion isn't alot compared to the debt, but if we can afford to throw that much money at something so frivolous as Mars, we could at least have reduced the debt that much. America is truly screwed.

Stepping up the space program is not only a stimulus program, it has direct benefits for our future as the technology spinoffs pay huge dividends. If you want to pay off the debt or fund anything we have to make some money and this is how. The space program was the only good government program that actually worked for goodness sakes! The ONLY one.

Our modern economy owes itself to the computer and technological development done for the space program. Not only that, it cows our rivals and keeps America as the dominate industrial power. And it turns our best and brightest into scientists and engineers instead of parasitical lawyers and bankers. We need a national goal like the space race to unify the country and trump the rest of the world. The only problem with Trump's proposal is it's only a 1/50th of what it should be.

Damn, are people really this dense?

Yeah anything space related is just a waste and dumb. If our infrastructure was perfect and we had a surplus then yea waste time and money on stupid sci fi dreams that can't be achieved in this persons lifetime. The Kennedy thing too,..total waste of time and money also. Just a show of bravado in a cold war time, did nobody any good and haven't gotten a lick of positives for the earth or americas debt. Stupid shit and NASA should be shut down and restricted only to weather forcast gathering which would be a benefit, not dreaming about a planet that takes 2000 years to get to..or removing planets from history books, so fucking stupid.

These programs should not be viewed as an handout, they are an investment. The benefits are numerous and unfortunately not known or understood. Our country wasn't just the leader in technology, we invented the technology and now falling behind.

I hear about space program as an investment but who has quantified it and who can say that had this money been spent elsewhere we wouldn't have other technology gains? I'm not arguing the point either way. I'm just saying it's an argument I've often heard without numbers.

Is $20 B on a mars trip better than $20 B spent on other tech investments? I really have no idea. I wonder how far that would go toward cancer, which it looks to me gets less than $10B/year in research. Or into jet packs or driverless cars or drones.

It would be a good feather if the US can be the first to actually put a man on mars.

No one can quantify the investment in actual numbers, and that is the hard part. I believe the Apollo project had a return much greater than its cost when you look at the technology that came out of it. This video highlights some of the importances of these programs

I'd build a space elevator and create a game so American kids can shoot down everybody else's satellites. We own space and we ought keep it. Idiots would let the Chinese and others take it, stupid.

Despite what the moon hoaxers say, we did not have the technology to do this in the late 60's and 70's (because it was a zinc-plated vacuum-tube culture) but today for $19.5 billion we could do a hell of a convincing hoax Mars landing and have money left over to build the wall.

I'm all for space exploration, and would love to see humans step foot on Mars but now it's more of a ego stroke. There is alot to overcome before humans can spend that much time in space. No doubt we could do it if we wanted to, but why, what's there it's a desolate rock.
Finding a better way off the planet, work on next gen of propulsion maybe setting up a basecamp on the moon and leaning more about how humans can survive low gravity and radiation in space. Is the next logical step.
Another issue is the ISS it's is a huge expense to keep that space station up there and manned. It's is taking up a huge part of nasas budget. Thanks to Obama the Russians are charging us a shit ton of money to use thier soyuz to put people and supplies up there.

The point of going to Mars isn't so much the getting there. It's all the problems that need to be solved to do it.

The solutions to those problems will be useful for far more than going to Mars.

Talking about going to Mars the way some people do is like talking about group sizes and someone just saying "well, just get closer to the target, why are you spending all that time, I could do that with a hole punch from the dollar store.

With current tech, mars is as far as we are going, shit gets real as far as mileage after mars. I think it would be better to solve some of these issues closer to earth. The moon has resources on it that could make rocket fuel. Maybe even start building things we need in space instead of spending billions rocketing it up there. NASA, is also optimistic about floating a habitat in venus' atmosphere.
Resently they have leaned that astronauts are having permanent vision problems from 6 months in 0 gravity on the space station. a trip to mars would be 2 years round trip along with being bombarded by radiation the whole time. We can search Mars with rovers and drones.

I agree, its not just about Mars, its about technological advancements, and investors. If America is the first to get to Mars, investors from around the world are going to invest in our country.

Its a smart business move.

The point is solving those problems.

Figuring out how to simulate gravity on part of a ship for instance would be useful for a lot more than a Mars trip, but without the Mars trip it just never gets high enough on the list to get done. Same for radiation shielding.

Even if they don't actually go to Mars, maybe the development for the trip adds some habitation module that spins to the ISS so that the astronauts sleep and eat in 1g.

To say nothing about the technologies that we would have to create for the people on the surface. I figure you would send up an automated system ahead of time that would sit on Mars collecting water and making oxygen and rocket fuel and just storing it for the astronauts when they get there. The things we would learn just building that automated plant itself would be amazing.

Or we could spend the money here rehabilitating crack whores in a revolving door system to the street. Your call.
