University of Chicago's 'Problem of Whiteness' class sparks controversy​

A sophomore was labeled a 'cyberterrorist' for voicing his concerns on social media​

A University of Chicago course focusing on the "problem of Whiteness" sparked outrage on social media after one of the university's students took to Twitter to share his concerns.

"Since I began college a year ago, I’ve documented all the anti-white hatred I’ve seen on campus. Without a doubt, this is the most egregious example," sophomore Daniel Schmidt tweeted on Nov. 1.
The course was set to "[examine] the problem of whiteness through an anthropological lens, drawing from classic and contemporary works of critical race theory," according to the course description.

"Critical race theorists have shown that whiteness has long functioned as an ‘unmarked’ racial category, saturating a default surround against which non-white or ‘not quite’ others appear as aberrant," the description said. "This saturation has had wide-ranging effects, coloring everything from the consolidation of wealth, power and property to the distribution of environmental health hazards…

Because white people have all the power. Only people in power can be racist. Other people can be prejudiced but they can't be racist because they have no power. That's what I learned from a spike Lee interview about 30 years ago.

Of course 50 years in the future when white people are a minority in this country people like spike Lee will still insist white people are racist and non whites in power are not. I have no doubt they will come up with equally tortured word salad logic to defend this position.

I see where there is a problem, words no long have meaning. See in my head they still do. Also I am white and the only power I hold is over myself. I can't even control my wife.

This is a tough one and I can’t believe this is legal. This is clearly discriminatory. I can’t help that k was born white anymore than they can they were born black. All that matters is what you do after you’re born. I’ve never done anything to anyone to keep them down.
