I've been buying the #10 cans of Mountain House. I have like 20 of them. Need to get more. But if the SHTF, the supermarket and pet stores will be visited to supplement that.
What do you do?

No I meant of the stew. I have been supplementing my Mountain House Foods with canned goods in a rotation since canned goods are much, much cheaper. I am using it for "lazy meals" so I keep out of those expensive ass buckets! I am also thinking of getting-
I'll see if they have some small sample sizes for me to try first.

No I haven’t. I guess I should try it one day but I never get around to it since the wife cooks.
It is really not that bad. I take some with me when spending nights at the property. Wish the prices were a bit better.
I was just gonna say, the Mountain House food is pretty good, better than some of their competitors and certainly a step up from MREs.
It used to be marketed more as Camp/Hunter food.
I got a 6 month supply of that stuff for me and the MRS a few years back. Add the stuff we normally have on hand and we should be good for about 10 months to a year.

I was disappointed by most of the replies. I understand what you meant (or at least I think I do). You are asking what we would do if the situation looked and felt like a bug out SHTF event, without the obvious signs like nuclear explosions. If I got that right, here's my answer:
First, a few assumptions:
1. No one around me is doing anything rash or panicking yet
2. There is no official word on anything so situation is very ambiguous
3. This is not your typical blackout.
4. People are doing the whole "bread and milk" freakout and retail food supplies are immediately close to depleted
So,
1. My children come home from school. No school until further notice. I assume other families do similar, but not all.
2. I call in sick at work if phone lines work. If not I just don't go. Assume others doing the same, but not all.
3. I pack my car with a prepared list of essentials. Most of our food and important stuff.
4. I lock up the house and talk with a few neighbors. Don't tell them where I am going, but ask them to keep an eye on my place.
5. Head upstate to my country place.
6. Get generator started there and do my best to get as much fuel as possible.
7. Food and basics are there, but need to think about well pump power, and firewood.
8. Assuming this goes more than a few days, speak with neighbors nearby (already know most of them) and start talking about the situation.
9. Hopefully by then I offer what I can in terms of expertise (most things except auto engine mechanics).
10. Start thinking about security. Drive around town to see if police, elected officials have info.
11. Establish a routine - start playing games, assign chores, and get to living and working. Depending on the season, of course.
That is the BEGINNING of the story, not the end. A LOT can go wrong on all sorts of fronts and I do not have an answer to nearly a fraction of it. But I trust my judgment and wits. Just having a place to go away from modernity is half the battle in my view. Having a few months of supplies is not all that hard either.

My proximity to NYC is the most pressing concern... 20 million hungry people is very dangerous. With fuel being limited, our fragile resupply structure implodes on itself... 2 or 3 days riots and people fleeing the city... most dont have cars or means to escape the city but enough will attempt it to make my situation more difficult to plan out... we have a bugout locale and many supplies to bug in... so it would depend on if the military blocks the bridges and tunnels. If they do I'm bugging in... if there is no military presence or martial law I'm bugging the hell out... even a million people making it across the river into the Hudson valley would put all of us in harm's way

Things would definitely be tricky after a week or so. I don’t really keep much more than a weeks worth of food in the house at any given time. I do have plenty of liquor and ammo though so I’d probably get drunk and raid my neighbors house.
