Advocates claim wolves are returning to New York State

A pack of animal advocates claims that recent DNA analysis proves that an animal believed to be a coyote shot by a hunter in upstate New York last winter was actually a wolf.

I've got a friend who is a biologist who specialized in wolves and was involved in the Yellowstone reintroduction years ago.He's been back in NY for years and heads another project to reintroduce wolves to the Adirondacks.Told me years ago that there are wolves in NY, with a wink, he said "what the hell, they consider us environmental terrorists anyway".

Funny how NYS only admits what benefits them. I remember when they said we don’t have mountain lions and I think that’s still their stance. They say one walked 1,800 miles or something stupid like that looking for a mate. I don’t believe it.

My neighbor saw one in the field across the road. Wasnt a bobcat, the tail was longer than the body and he said it looked like it was about 100 lbs, as big as my bloodhound he said. DEC told him he didnt see a mountain lion. 2 days later someone from the Fed wildlife management or somesuch showed up at his door and wanted to look around the area he saw it.They found a deer head and part of a spine and hair and blood by the creek about 30 yds away..Said it was typical of a mountain lion kill. they often leave the head and some spine and carry off the carcass. They were pretty sure he saw a mountain lion.

Read the article below and you tell me how they determined that this cougar was a captive one that escaped or walked 1,800 miles in the wrong direction looking for a girlfriend?? Doesn’t make sense to me.

Eastern cougars (mountain lions) do not have a native, self sustaining population in New York State. They have been absent from this state since the late 1800s; however, there have been a few isolated sightings.

I believe I saw a mountain lion, Westchester. I also have a pic of a deer leg 20ft up in a tree, that was in Chappaqua.

Read the article below and you tell me how they determined that this cougar was a captive one that escaped or walked 1,800 miles in the wrong direction looking for a girlfriend?? Doesn’t make sense to me.

I dunno what their methods are. I think if there are any cougars in NYS they were probly released by eco terrorists like my friends organization.

It seems odd, but all the time I was growing up down in Cattaraugus county, there was never a coyote seen or heard. I lived 6 miles outside of town in farm country. I hunted almost every day, and ran a trap line for many years as well. We would have seen or heard them, but never did. Then, as if by magic, they suddenly appeared, and within 2-3 years, they were everywhere. There was a bunch of speculation that the DEC had released them in order to help control the whitetail population. Was it true ? I don't know. The DEC flat out denied any such idea, but the manner in which the coyote population went from none to a bunch to the current population is suspicious at the least. Would I put it past the government to release wolves, coyotes, or mountain lions ? Of course not. They release dangerous criminals and deadly diseases all the time. Why would animals be any different ?

Never seen a bear at my parents but now that the Dec has been capturing and releasing problem bears at my parents driveway people are seeing them down there.

I've been told there are wolves in NY state also and have had locals say they've seen them, but none of my friends or acquaintances that hunt, trap and have cameras out night and day have never seen or heard one.
Maybe in the vast reaches of the Adirondacks, but I would think that if they were there, they would be spotted while they were headed to greener pastures with more opportunities to hunt easier prey.

I have heard Greenwich residences say they have seen a mountain lion up the back roads neat the NY border and along the Merrit Pkwy.

My great uncle swears he saw one in his back yard probably two decades ago now. My friend's also swear they saw one cross the road when they were driving home. Our one friend knew the girl that lives at the farm they saw it go I to and she said they have seen it multiple times. The farm is less than 2 miles from my great uncles place.

My uncle thinks they had one at his trailer park. Something killed and dragged off his neighbors huskey. They tracked it through the woods for awhile but lost it. Had foot prints that looked pretty lion like to me. Not sure what else would drag off a full grown huskey.

NYS Dec claims that people that see lions are mistaking them for Bob cats. If that’s the case how many bobcats show up on cameras? Also there are plenty of people that claim they have pictures of mountain lions in NYS and the DEC disregards them. Read the article link from the DEC I posted they literally say every picture of a lion claiming to be from NYS is a fake. How could they know or claim that? Then they claim some have wondered here from the Dakota area (1,800 miles), some have escaped from captivity and preserves as well.

The guy across from my parents place in Allegheny County claims one was stalking him and he shot it. He has it stuffed and in his place. Now this guy didn’t have a pot to piss in so I don’t think he bought the stuffed lion to put in his trailer. Did he really kill it right where my parents property is? I don’t know but many claim to have seen them from many areas in NYS from many different backgrounds that I have spoken to. I can’t imagine that many people are lying or are wrong, but maybe.

Don't know about wolves, but I KNOW there are Mountain lions in NY... Saw one right at the edge of my property here in Tioga County. oh, 30 or so years ago.. All black, big as a German Shepard, a round tail that was astoundingly long, and seemed to stand almost straight out.. I'll never as long as I live forget how it moved, even though it was just walking in a clear area for a short time, before slipping into the woods. So lithe, graceful,and light on its feet, Just kind of slinked as it walked. It moved like it was a spirit.. hard to describe, but if you saw it you would understand.. Had a friend see one in pre dawn hours in Tioga County as well, ran in front of the school bus he was driving, in a hilly, wooded area.. He too said it was unmistakable as he got a good view of it in his headlights . Knew a woman that saw one in Tompkins County just a few miles from the Tioga County border, and took pictures of the paw prints, She said they were huge. Yes the DEC denies it and always will, but they deny everything. Bears are everywhere these days, see them regularly now. Saw a mother with 3 cubs along a main road in Spencer not long ago.. I worry about my grand kids playing in the yard as there are bears everywhere right where they live in the Tioga/Spencer area....

A few years ago I know for a fact I saw a mountain lion on the Hutch in Harrison near the gas station. It was 1:00 am and I was going to work in North White Plains. The cat walked out from the shoulder and walked back into the woods right in front of me. It was the size of a big German Shepherd and was a light tan color and had a tail at least 2 feet long. Everyone, including most people on here swore I saw a bobcat. I did some research after that and read there have been many sightings of a mountain lion in the NY-CT border in that area.

Must be a squirrel.
Pretty amazing how there aren’t that many guys in this board and yet we have 3-4 that have seen a mountain lion and 1-2 that have seen wolves. Now multiply that out and I’m sure there are plenty that have seen both. No way that many people are wrong.

When I was young, growing up in the hills outside of Binghamton, my mother used to say that there was a panther that lived in the woods across the road. There's over 300 acres there. All wooded. Sometimes at night you could hear a sound, hard to describe. Very similar to a big cat "roar" but a higher pitch. It would send chills down your back.

Someplace on here, I posted pictures of tracks that my niece found outside her kitchen window. Everyone I showed them to swore it was a cat

Just wanted to share...

I live in a rural area. And used to frequent the watering holes...none of which are closer than ten miles. Tavern types ran the gamut of farmers, loggers, trades, and in the fall plenty of hunters.

It never ceased to amaze me, the stories of wolves, coyotes, cougars, bears, fishers...you name it, that DEC got blamed for releasing into the area, and that's why everything from deer to squirrels were in decline. And having some personal history with EnCon, well, the stories were fun, and perception is reality for many.

I once knew a guy from up north where I used to hunt told me he saw a lynx a very long time ago. And it is true that DEC fooled around with releasing lynx...never worked out, and I certainly believed he saw one. He was a woodsman and knew his shit.

Anyway, possibility vs probability. But in the end it's hard facts, half truths, or total nonsense. I find the research on wolf-eastern coyote genetics pretty interesting.
