I think I may start looking at just renting a house in TN or something and waiting or the right moment to buy this summer. That way I'm moved, and I can actively look while saving money compared to NY. It has to be a net savings, even if I'm renting... and i doubt anyone would care if I was a gun owner there landlords wise.

Moving to TN feels like it may be the best decision I have ever made. I wish I did this a long time ago.
You should do it if you can. I'll save about $250 a paycheck without NYS stealing from me. The only thing wrong here is home/land prices are really high. Rents are probably comparable to NY though.
Everyone should get out of NY ASAP.

I mean in my case it'll probably be over $250 a paycheck, but who knows. Sounds like a net savings even if I'm renting in a rural area and wait for a good deal?

Depends on where you are in NY. My older son is paying less than $1500 for a really nice 2 bedroom apartment with a pool and all the amenities in Lenoir City which would cost easily $2400 by us in the Hudson Valley.

I was looking at rentals when home shopping wasn't going too good. $2500/month would have gotten a decent house in a neighborhood in this area. I'm "living" in a hotel until closing because I wasn't able to find any other short-term rentals.

I'm not sure I'd need a house. My main requirements are:
* Needs to be OK with two cats.
* Needs to be OK with me having guns / a safe / ammo.
* Needs a decent kitchen, since I cook and prepare my meals.
* Prefer a good size pantry space because I love to cook and eat well and not just bags of chips.
That's basically it.

you might want to look into the RV lifestyle. Everything on one spot. If you set the coach up correctly, you can live out here in the wilderness indefinitely. we are currently, on BLM land at the KOFA Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. doesn't cost a dime, until you need propane or water
We might have to run up to Quartzite ( 22 miles to the north ) to dump our garbage, because we are responsible campers.
Another option we are looking into, is simply buy and acre of land near a lake or stream, put in a 25 x 60' cement pad, run a 50amp cable, sewer and water, and if we want to get off the road for awhile, we can just park the Escape Pod and do whatever

My needs and wants are a little bit different but I never want to move again.
1. I needed to be somewhere between not in NY, and ~1000 miles from NY
2. No state income tax, no school tax, and low property tax
3. As much land as possible (12 acres in this case)
3a. able to shoot on the land
3b. able to raise animals on the land
3c. suitable for a large garden/orchard/etc.
3d. NOT IN TOWN
I got all of those, plus some woods (heat source), multiple water sources (stream, well, and county/utility water), garage, basement, 2 outbuildings (not the greatest condition), fenced for livestock, out of the way but not isolated, and more.
Two and a half weeks left until closing, and then I will literally be living the dream.
If anyone needs me, it would be in their best interest to make sure they are welcome there so they don't get fed to the pigs.

I'm very simple. If I can sleep well, workout, get a good shave, and eat good meals, I'm happy. I don't care if I have to give up leisure to have a simple life and I have to work hard. As long as I'm feeling good and can make myself presentable, and take care of my boys (my cats) then I'm happy. I exist to work hard and take good care of myself and family as my main priority. Everything else is secondary to those goals.

We have been looking at New Hampshire. Much like TN, the land/housing prices are out of control. They rank #1 in most things, like freedom and guns. The plus is I could buy a piece of land and go on weekends to get it ready. TN is a little far to go on weekend getaways, so moving there would be a one shot thing. Is there something wrong with considering NH? FWIW we like winter, so thats not a concern.

TN will be free much longer than NH will be. All those in the NE are going communist one by one. NH property taxes are not cheap either.

Different than you a big no no for me with NH is winter. I despise it. I want to ride my bike outdoors year round.

Funny you say that...I have actually been riding my Mt bike more this winter than I ever have. NH will still get the cold, but def not the snow. I am in the lake effect band, so that doesnt help. But I have no problem riding in 30s/40s. If you are referring to motorcycles, well I have seen some of them out a few times this winter too lol.

I recently gave up mountain biking after 8 years and road ride now 60-100 miles a week average. Fell in love with the sport. Yeah, this "winter" has been amazing. Haven't been indoors on my smart trainer yet and probably won't. I'm in the Hudson Valley. NH will definitely be colder and snowier than where I am. I will road ride as long as it is 32 or above although I have ridden this winter when the real feel was in the upper 20's.

Ya I wouldnt take the road bike out till spring...learned my lesson hitting sand years ago. I put many miles on the spin bike during the winter months.

We are careful on our group rides and obviously have to take turns, descents and such with caution. I do wash the bike after every ride though.
