Washington Post claims Biden should 'consider using price controls' to fight inflation​

Last week, the Washington Post spoke with several economists who listed their ideas on how to solve the economic issues facing the nation. One idea listed for the White House to "combat inflation" was price controls. The ideas was suggested by the Roosevelt Institute's Todd Tucker, in which he argued that the time may be at hand to "destigmatize" concerns over price controls.

"To ensure that the wealthy do not bid up prices for essential items, the time is now to begin destigmatizing greater democratic control over price levels," Tucker concluded.

Price controls have been ridiculed by conservatives and liberals alike as a solution to combat inflation. Economists have criticized efforts to portray price controls as anything other than a failure, but plenty of news pieces continue to push them following Biden’s first year in office.

Here’s my issue with raising the interests rates is the only people that will be hurt again is the middle class. Rich people pay cash and poor people just don’t buy houses and cars for the most part. This raise the interest rate is BS and houses are already crazy town prices, same with cars.
I’ll need a car soon. I have a 2014 that my wife and son are sharing now. He’s heading to college in fall semester and will need a job. Prices for cars are already crazy then I’ll get hit with a stupid interest rate because Biden can’t manage a cookie jar.

Taxation is a form of Control by the Government over each of us, but notice how certain people in Congress tend to get over on it and/or owe thousands of Dollars? Price controls guarantee two things:

• Shortages of those items "controlled" in legitimate markets.
• A huge black market in those same items, with organized crime getting involved.

Price controls lead to one thing only. Empty shelves.

Even when they're not mandated, and retailers voluntarily keep their prices artificially low to "not be gougers" you get empty shelves.

IMO this is different because the rent control is usually just an apparent meant here or there not the entire building or across the board. Essentially if you have a 200 unit rental 20 of them will be rent co trolled and you just charge the other $189 tenants more to make up for it. This maybe what happens if you do price control, but some companies only make one product and can’t spread out the costs.
Also IMO rent control is an attempt to get private people out of the market and have a government takeover. I thought that was the effect they were going for with the eviction moratorium.

The government should have no authority to control prices. That's not their role. It's an overreach, and exactly what you describe naturally will happen.

Honestly the more control the government has over micromanaging an industry, or taxation -- or quite frankly anything -- we've seen them, time and time again, utilize these "powers" as a weapon to push something unethical or unconstitutional (ie, OSHA and mandates to give a recent example.)

All these little transgressions add up, and this is what most generations of Americans have neglected as the water boiled slowly till this point.

Speaking of inflation I went to dollar tree two days ago and each item rung up as $1.25. They have chocolate bars at still $1 and a few other items but basically their default price is up 25% now. I found a news article speaking of the same.

I'd suggest stocking up soon before the next shortage.

They might drop some more over the next 6 months or a year, but something's going to happen sooner or later to drive them back through the roof.
