NYS gov handout for development of window sized heat pumps for apartments

More handouts to companies. Why do we do this? If there is a need for it let the market develop it on its own. I would potentially purchase one for my third floor if they are much more efficient than what I have now. It’s 520 square feet but I don’t hear it because heat rises but I do cool it.

We all know how well window shaker AC units seal up, and just like a window shaker, how will this work with mulit room apartments?

Depends on the building. These plug into a standard Nema 5-15 receptacle. It would be no different than a window shaker AC, actually less load due to the VFD. If everyone in that building was already using AC units it would probably be fine.
There is nothing magic about these. Its a step up from a window shaker with easy install and efficiency and heating ability like a split unit. A BTU is a BTU how may amps it takes to get there is the game

It’s what a reversible fan switch right? You just reverse the polarity so the motor on the fan spins one way then the other right? Now those will cost $2,000 and use good for the environment refrigeration.

uuum no. you'll need a reversing valve, to reverse the flow of the refrigerant. a defrost control, fan controls ( yes to reverse the fan ) hi/lo limit controls......

or

they could do what every country in the world does and install split mini-heat pumps, which have been around for 60- years and just hang them off the side of the building

So why couldn’t you just put that in a different housing and make it for a window? I know the compressor is outside but they could probably put it internal.

it would take up some room, but the discharge air from the condenser would be considerable, 100°+ plus you still have to deal with condensation from both indoor and outdoor units

Not at all off topic. I’m guessing the new stuff will be up to code or they wouldn’t be doing it. At least the one unit discussed is for an entire house or apartment. I’m guessing the new stuff will be up to code or they wouldn’t be doing it. At least the one unit discussed is for an entire house or apartment. I'm saying it likely wouldn't be up to code for primary source of heat for a dwelling in most markets. You could use it for cooling or supplemental heat. There are plenty of whole-home heat pumps that work fine for whole home heating and cooling and they are getting more popular for that purpose. I agree the price will have to come down without a major subsidy for this to work as described although I can see this getting retrofitted on the high end of the market especially apartments without central A/C as an upgrade from traditional window A/Cs. Blocking less of the window is a nice perk and for downstate folks that pay rent of $5,000 a month and up the price is less of an issue.

I heat my whole house with my wood burning appliance. I did a lot this past year with the cost of fuel. I used it 90% of the time. I saved a TON of money. I heat with propane, even though prices have went down a little, I think this year will be another year of wood burning. We'll see how the prices are.

For a long time, I only used my wood burner 20-30% of the year. Or when I wanted that extra burst of heat without running the furnace more. Or to add the ambiance when friends are over... now it's like I need to use it again.

I got my wood stacked high and ready to rock for this year!

In the Heat pump world, there is no such thing as cold air, just air without heat. when your refrigerant is at -40°, everything above that temp is warm air, Air always travels from warm to cold, so 20° air still has a ton of heat in it when being absorbed by -40° refrigerant

If I took an off the shelf unit and just installed it backwards in the winter it wouldn't suddenly need a defrost cycle would it ?

Or, is that because the heat source is now below freezing because it's winter outside ?
