I have a Jackery 500 with 100w foldable solar panel. It can power a bunch of stuff for a good period of time (LED lights, chargers, etc). I like the unit, but they are very expensive compared to other brands. I guess the steep discounts bring them down to where they should be.

I asked a geek friend about the 1000 unit and he said it’s good for charging phones and other small stuff. Jackery says they’re good for lots of bigger things, even refrigerators.
What’s your thoughts?

The technology has come a long way and only getting better! The thing is choosing wisely which company offers a good warranty and attachments. Been thinking on theses among others

if its a Solar powered Generator it should run directly from the Sun with out any batteries ..

that is my thought on the Jackery ..

i will stick with a gas one that can run when the sun is not out ..

My 500 is good for charging. I also use it to power the modem and router for internet. If its a summer day and power is out I may not wanna deal with firing generator up. The Jackery can power the internet along with phone chargers for many hours.

I would say if you wanted to power a (small) fridge it would be safer to get the 2000w version. But at that price range you can get a decent Honda 2200w inverter generator. Or you could build your own "solar generator" with a few panels, inverter, charge controller, and some 12v deep cycle batteries.

FWIW, my Jackery 500 will power my IceCo 65q 12v compressor fridge for approx 2 days.

Jackery was the first to mass market, so they have the name recognition. Others have entered the race and now there are better options.
Anker puts out solid stuff if you want to stick with a name brand with a better ROI.

Whatever you get, make sure it has USB C for faster charging and directly powering most newer laptops/ChromeBooks.

Not meaning to steal Hochulsucks thunder, but I'll toss in my .

I looked at Jackery but decided they were overpriced and they mostly (if not all) use lithium ion batteries as opposed to lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo) batteries. And if you want additional batteries they are way expensive.

There are lots of other options as others have said.

I ended up with a Pecron E2000LFP. It's has the LiFePo batteries, expandable and pretty simple to use. I really don't need apps, wifi or bluetooth and crap like that. That makes it affordable. $860 on Amazon right now with a coupon.

It has a 2000w inverter and 1920 watt-hour batteries, which is enough for me to run my fridge and freezer overnight. From 100% charge it will use 60 - 80%. I could add my furnace to the mix as well. Not sure yet if it will run all 3, so I might have to choose what I need most. Downside - it is made in Chy-na. But it is proabbly the best bang for the buck.

I found 100watt solar panels on Amazon for about $60 each, about half of the cheap Harbor Freight panels.

A lot depends on how you plan to use it. For me, I wanted a convenient power source for short term outages and to be able to supplement my generator overnight during long term ones. Also nice to have power for off-grid needs.

I’m right at the top of the fence on buying a setup. It would help a lot for “just in case”
but
It’s $1100 for just in case.

-I don’t off-road camp. I have a 40’ camper on a seasonal site.
-I have all battery powered tools.
-emergency use unless you guys can think of other uses

So what side of the fence are you going to push me to? Lol

everyone here has a gas or diesel 12 vdc generator sitting outside ..

its called your car or truck ..

think on how to utilize it ..

it can power a 12 vdc inverter to get 120 vac .. and might be able to power your Furnas and other things ...

bigger gas tank then a portable gas genny .. 2 or 3 galls to 15 gals or more ..

and it can power 12v light bulbs right from the battery ...

during the NY Ice Storm in the 90's .. my 72 duster just sat in the driveway idling and powered some 12v lights bulbs in the house ..

while we cooked off the camping and wood stove ..
