The couple has three children who were home at the time of the incident but were not harmed. They are currently in the custody of family members.

My first thoughts are how terrible for these kids that will be scarred for life. I hope their family members can help them through this so they can still have good lives.

My second thought is what a selfish scumbag that guy was for doing that to his kids.

My third is that there needs to be better screening of potential police before hiring. Just as they need proficiency tests with their firearms annually/bi annually, there needs to be mental and physical fitness tests at the same rate.

This would never have happened if he'd had to have a permit to possess a gun, an extensive background check via the NYSP contractors for the gun AND the ammo, and had to wait 15 days before picking up the gun.

Retired, so obviously been on the job a while.

PDs are having to RELAX their hiring standards because they can't get anyone to take the jobs (can't imagine why in today's political climate towards cops)

Not to mention 30 years in a high stress job can certainly take its toll. PTSD is not reserved solely for combat vets. Same as personal life issues.
