If I'm correctly understanding your meaning, that bit doesn't bother me at all really, though there are other things that seem at least questionable. Even the article there says, "with a decent scope, a person with basic firearm proficiency can strike a target from 150 to 200 yards away, roughly the distance of the shot fired by the Kirk assassin", and I very much agree.
I'm primarily a handgun guy; never was especially great with long guns, but hell.. when I was a younger man (though well practiced), I could hit a pie plate with at least a couple of rounds at 100yds with open sights on a revolver on a good day. Even being fairly shit with a rifle, 150-200 yds, on a 30-06 bolt action with even a mediocre scope, doesn't sound at all like much of a challenge to me for anyone who's fired the gun before; so long as the rifle is dialed in.

Guys I hunted with in Montana were dropping deer and elk at 900-1000 yards. Our range had 2 1000 yards ranges, they’d hit steel all day.

Funny how this discussion thread fails to address the obvious tactic of the anti gun crowd with this article. That is the argument for a digital data base of every firearm sold and its current location as firearm transfers are tightly controlled. A felony for an illegal sale. All imported firearms or actions are registered and serial numbered with additional paper work with the ATF. This in addition to U.S. customs as well. Remember when the ATF was building that data base and the courts ruled that they couldn't but they continued until they had to dismantle it? Yeah well this is the new resurrected argument and campaign to have what essential would be a confiscation data base. Currently the ATF has all the records for this rifle and all others in boxes stored in warehouses. Searching through them is a tough task for sure. But they have the records.

What about all those guns that were made before serialization was mandatory ? I have several that have no serial number on them. How does the government know about them ? No 4473 was ever filled out, that form didn't exist until just a few decades ago.

This is where the ammo registration fits in ... They can wittle that number down ( of gun owners ) to a manageable number... Who in the last 6 months bought such and such ammo...Then ... they look and gather paperwork to see if you used a credit card to buy a scope attached to that model of gun .... We leave unexpected trails into that big data base.

That won't pan out all that well either. Millions of us have been reloading for decades. We have countless thousands of bullets, primers and powder sitting on shelves in our reloading rooms. Most shooters have stockpiles of ammunition that date back several years.

Even if they start collecting data on every round sold in the entire country today, there will be billions of rounds in circulation that aren't on any list anywhere.

The whole premise of this thread smells off to me. The photos of the touted found weapon looks like a current Mauser M18 model to me. It comes chambered in the reported caliber (30-06) among others.

Some dumb ass hired retired talking heads on Fox started talking about it being an old WW2 rifle relic but I think they are full of shit.

WW2 vintage Mausers were variants of the Model 98, were chambered in 7.92×57mm (8mm), and were dressed in wood stocks.

Even if restocked in what looks to be nylon, I can't believe vintage WW2 Mausers were rechambered to 30.06.

Someone is making shit up somewhere since the photos of the gun, the reported caliber, and the reported vintage of the gun don't all logically line up.
