I hear this crap all the time from my neighbors who leave their cars and houses unlocked and are upset when they get nailed by some lowlife tugging at handles to see if someone slipped.

I'm not saying people deserve to have their shit taken, I'm agreeing that there needs to be some sense of responsibility. "But they shouldn't take it, it's mine! That's not right!" Yeah, you're right. Stealing is scumbaggy behavior, yet it happens all the time and people just expect people to not do it. It's a nice thought and all, but the bottom line is that scumbags will take your shit if you give them the chance. If I knew that my cars would not get hit by simply locking my doors vs taking the risk to not lock them and maybe-it'll-be-gone-maybe-it-won't when I come back to it, I'll make sure to lock my shit.

Again, not defending thieves. Even local pd calls it a "let-in" when someone calls up and says their car got rummaged through. Officially, it's a break-in, but in actuality, the person basically should have put a sign on it that said, "Here, go for it! I'm gullible into thinking you'll be a decent human and not punishing me for locking my stuff! Spare key is under the seat because I'm dumb. Might as well take the car too!"

A SMART person knows that people steal shit, especially unattended $100 bills. The RESPONSIBLE person, wanting to keep their $100 bills, will deconstruct the piles and secure the $100 bills. Even though it's not fun or awesome. Recognise threat to yourself or property. Take action to minimize threat. You cannot rely on laws or morality for protection. Saying "that ain't fair" or "that shouldn't happen" never helped anybody.

I can see charging the same for the theft in both circumstances, but *also* charging breaking and entering for the locked one. But the theft is the theft either way.
