Sad. As a California native, I had to really grow into liking Florida, it wasn’t an instant thing. It’s a cool place in some ways, a lot of ways, actually.

I also can’t help but wonder if Florida’s reputation causes these stories to bubble up. Surely this kind of stuff happens elsewhere?

It certainly helps that Florida is the 3rd most populist state. That is a greater pool to find the biggest idiots from. Factor in nice weather year round and it's plenty of opportunities to do stupid things.

Eh, you don’t get that specific sort of infamy out of California though. If anything, Cali has even better weather. My hypothesis is that the old Florida pirate culture never really died out - it’s libertarian in some ways, so that a state that populous reaps some benefits, but also gets misfits, folks fleeing unthinkable crimes, and weirdos. I originally thought of Florida as a crappy California and thus came away unimpressed. But I learned that palm trees, beaches, and orange groves don’t really make these states remotely alike. The latter observation makes me both embrace it more and sort of understand weird Florida Man things.
