The other 60% are driving either a Kia or a Toyota. Dash lights come on even if the headlights are off. Dumbest feature ever implemented on a car. If my wife got pulled over for driving with no headlights (yet again), I'd be thankful.

A fair number of newer Honda’s and also Cadillacs illuminate the instruments when the lights are off. That in combination with excessively bright DRL setups leads less than observant people to think that their lights are on, but they in fact have no taillights or side markers. It’s pretty darn hard to see the forward glow from behind a vehicle especially in areas with street lights.

I almost rear ended someone who whipped out of a side street in front of me with no lights, out on 25 in Mattituck. I was on a motorcycle and I snapped the bike around him at the last second. Very thankful for armored leathers as my elbow caught his driver side mirror on the way by. So, I’ve got little good to say about that situation. Most cars introduced in the last 20 years have an automatic headlight feature. Don’t know why people don’t just use it.

It really had nothing to do with drunk drivers. That's incredibly short sighted and just what the freedom robbers and revenueers want you to belive. Emotional nonsense. The reality is, again, once you let the government in, you're screwed.

IMO the current dui laws don’t go far enough. States are cracking down more all the time. Some of the penalties are brutal, and will be more brutal in the future. I love when a drunk driver gets pulled over.

Several years ago, I got to attend the funeral of my cousin on what would have been her 19th birthday. Her and her friend were both killed by a drunk driver while standing in her driveway eating ice cream. He left the road, jumped the ditch and went across the lawn to get to them.

I have no sympathy for what happens to anyone who chooses to drive while impaired at any level. Victimless crime my ass.

to add to this .. how many who have lost there license to drive with multiple DWI's in there record and still find a car and drive when drunk and wreak the auto causing damage to property and/or lose of someone else's life ??

I've always had a dream to drive my car around with the lights off, while hammered, at 100 mph through town. That should be fine. I'm a damn citizen and it should be my right. And I know that society can work awesomely by completely eschewing the "ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure" concept. Just because there is indisputable evidence that certain behavior has a very high likelihood of resulting in complete catastrophe, it's government run amok to try and inhibit that destructive behavior until the very instant it results in a mother and father killed on their way home from dinner by a drunk driver.

And frankly I'm offended that anybody thinks it should be their right to drive around with some relative confidence that the roads are not packed with drunk drivers. What nerve! If you don't like the roads full of drunk drivers stay home.

I will agree that we don't need a law for everything. These days I can't be bothered with stopping people for their stupidity, when I was with the military police, if I saw a vehicle without headlights on it was never a fishing trip, it was always pullover hey your lights are off is everything okay. I was on my way never once did I ticket.

That there is an interesting question. I wish there was a way to know how many drunks are actually driving on our roads compared to how many people get stopped.
