I think this is an interesting study. I've been curious about what a typical japanese or german soldier thought during ww2. I've tried looking it up. I've listened to first hand interviews.
Like every country ever in war the loser loses, and the victor writes the history of it how they want.
It seems about 1/2 the Germans were caught up in the nazi cult of personality and believed all the propoganda of race superiority and we're happy to go along with everything. The SS embodied this persona but there were those in the general vermacht, kriegsmarine or luftwaffe that shared these feelings.
The other half were just doing what they thought would protect their homeland, their neighbors, their sisters, their daughters and their parents. They didn't care about nazi ideology one way or the other but cared deeply about the fatherland and communities. Those Germans really weren't any different than our boys fighting them. They probably had more in common with each other than not. Not all Germans were brutal savage baby killing SS. Some were just regular guys trying to protect their homeland and the guy next to them.
Yes and no.
Think of it this way. You're living in a time before internet, cable and most tv. Some places barely have electricity and radio. You hear your country's propoganda and don't see why you wouldn't believe it, you can't fathom it would be dishonest or that they would deliberately lie and deceive you. You have no reason not to believe what you're told. There aren't any alternative means to gather information other than talking to your neighbor down the road.
This is why it's so dangerous having an entire generation indoctrinated by lies and propoganda. Cnn and college professors are just as dangerous as goerbels because they also claim an aura of authenticity and authority.

Many were also prisoners captured from other battles forced to fight for Germany. Hell, we captured koreans in Normandy on d day.

I'm not so sure. There are other reports that that guy stabbed 4 members prior to this and that's why they went after him.
The media sucks on factual reporting none of us were there so we'll never get the whole unbiased chain of events.
