I also have been shooting it for about 10 years. Kills deer well, accurate. Easy to reload.
No issues find ammo, I hunt deer with it, so maybe shoot 5 rounds a year at most.
While you are correct those rights do not apply equally in school settings, to search without consent with no threat being reported is a massive over reach for the school (providing the limited information in the article is correct) and I predict their insurance company will be writing a check.
I say go decent but cheaper. I like the Traditions line, spend some money on a scope. I would not worry about something that shoots smokeless powder, but something that shoots Triple 7 or pyrodex (pellets are simpler) with 209 shotgun primers.

On the way home from the gun show with a buddy, he was telling me about where he had seen a bunch of guys shooting a few months before, open field, lots of trucks park next to the road...we are driving by the sa,e spot, and there they are again. Why didn't you invite us?
I think I bought mine when I bought the barrel (16" carbine).
If you cannot find any on ebay or someplace I will loan you mine for a bit (just north of Syracuse).
Sometimes I will see them on 24 hour campfire - will let you know if I see any around.
