You will get lots of opinions and thoughts on this. My thoughts are 9mm is a good round and you have extra capacity in a gun with a 9mm, it’s lighter, more comfortable, and it’s easier to do a mag change in most of the guns these days. 9mm is generally softer shooting as well. What do I mean by easier to do a mag change well I have an sig 365 and it’s a 1.5 stack so the mag is a bit fatter. That means the mag well is as well. In a serious stress situation we all know dexterity can bean issues so that fatter magazine is easier to handle and insert.
Now NYS takes a bit of the capacity advantage out of it but if you had a gun that held 17 rounds of 9mm you would have to do 1/2 as many magazine changes and that’s a huge tactical advantage IMO, especially in a multiple attacker scenario.
I was carrying a ruger LCPII for a while and I changed to a 9mm because the .380 round is subpar IMO and those magazines are so skinny they are hard to handle and insert into the firearm. Now is .45 ACPa better round than 9mm, yes marginally IMO.
The.45 ACPisa heavier larger diameter round so it can have greater stopping power and better or larger wound cavity leading to bleeding out faster but there have been much advancements in 9mm due to the popularity of the round. Most if not all of these advancements have translated over to .45 ACP as well but new research indicates that the increased velocity is some 9mm rounds make up for its size shortcomings.
IMO any gun is better than no gun and it will boil down to what you are proficient with and will carry most often. Many.45 ACP guns are heavy, clunky, and larger due to the felt recoil. Also many 9mm barrels are shorter than the rounds are tested at so ballistics can be less than the packages so keep that in mind as well. Most rounds are tested out of 4” barrels for 9mm. Take into consideration how many magazines are you planning to carry and how well you do at changes. Simply having an extra magazine or two isn’t enough. Also it’s a difficult question to answer since the cops carry 9mm and not.45ACP we do not have a lot of real world data to compare. Ballistic gelatin does not take into account adrenaline or the will to live.
Not to cause confusion but there is a very suitable round called the .40 caliber many overlook including me.
To me there is no one sized fits all answer and I still do carry my .380 here and there if dressing up or going to the gym

I still carry my Staccato P in gym shorts but I get the appeal of a pocket carry.I wish I could do that but I already carry some very very large OEM equipment in my shorts.
More seriously, I like to pocket carry in gym shorts and that rules out all but very small guns. I use a G42 for that, yes I know there are smaller options but I keep all my pistol shooting in the Glock family for cross-familiarity.
