I was at military college near the outbreak of the first gulf war. Student activists from a nearby university got it stuck in their heads that they had to protest. Student groups there would erect shanty towns on their own campus to protest lack of diversity and would sit down in front of the...
Well,I’ve never seen rabbit or pheasant there. Lots of squirrels. In fact, I was tracking three from my blind. I got a couple of judo heads in my quiver just is case one gets too close. They went to den as soon as those guys started moving around. Stomping around the woods is no way to get a...
Arrived an hour before sunrise, set up a blind. Waited patiently at a place I know the deer will visit.
At, 7:30, I pair of city folk showed up with shotguns hunting for god knows what. They made more noise than a herd of buffalo. On their third lap around the property, I figured they cleared...
Not many, it’s been a slow September. Some mornings, I see none at all. These two make six, if I don’t count the reds.
I should get to go out Friday and Saturday as well. But, I’ll probably look into scouting for Sunday morning.
Score 2 for Ruger. I would have bagged 3, but one failed to fire and was stuck in the chamber. The squirrel ran off before I could clear it.
The top one was particularly messy. I aimed for the head but only grazed his ear. He fell out of the tree about 60 feet and hit hard, but was not put...
In my experience, these sort of flyers are all luck of the draw. My guess is, he only notices flyers when they’re the last shot in a competition.
I’ve thought for a while that how we measure groups is sensitive to outliers. Using a chronograph is probably a better way to reckon ammo...
I’ve been spending the last few weeks getting the new Henry dialed in. Today, I had an opportunity to show some love to and old faithful.
I recently swapped the existing scope rings on my Ruger 10/22 for Vortex low-rise rings. I needed to re-zero the scope before taking it into the field.
I...
First blood for the Henry H001. Nevertheless, I missed his head and took him in the shoulder. Although, he died quickly, the squirrel seemed a little mangy. So, I through it back. I'm not a huge fan of catch-and-release squirrel hunting.
Henry H001 22LR w/ Leupold VX1 2-7x28 Rimfire
CCI...
Well, I already ordered the barrel sight and front sight. I might as well get the Rimfire groove sight as well. I guess I'm doomed to keep dumping cash into this rifle.
Back to the range, this time with a Leupold 2-7x28 VX1 Rimfire scope. This is basically the smallest scope with decent optics I could afford.
I'll probably use the skinner sight for spring and summer plinking. But, I need the scope for squirrels.
Returned the Henry to the original profile by attaching the Skinner sight. Zeroing the sight was kind of a pain.
My eyes are shit so the groups were bigger at 25 yards. But, I figure I'll be hunting closer than that for the next month or so.
Visited Stewart State Forest early this morning before going to the gun range. Stewart is shotguns and bows only. My 20 gauge is configured for turkeys. But, it works pretty good for squirrels with 6 shot game loads. Using a shotgun with scope and extra-choke is kinda hitting the easy...
I live 45 minutes away. But, I work from home two days a week. It makes my daytime schedule very flexible. I'd love to join a club. But, I'm not much of a joiner and I'd have trouble going to the meetings regularly.
I've got a speed D loader coming. I don't really need one for range shooting. I'm not in a hurry there. But, I'll totally use it for plinking.
It funny. I use the same size scope on my other Rimfires and it is not so obtrusive. But, I really dislike the look of it. I have a skinner sight...
I usually avoid weekends. But, I like to go at least once a week. I'll go twice a week if I'm able.
I prefer Tuesday morning. But, I'll also go Saturday, Sunday or Friday mornings depending on my work schedule or family plans. I'll go less during hunting seasons...if the weather permits.
One more pic. I checked the mail late this afternoon, skinner sight and sling had arrived. Here's a pic of the interim hunting configuration. I figure I'll put on the skinner sight later in the fall when I won't be using it for squirrels as much.
Just a new Henry update.
First, the rifle is a real kick to hunt and shoot. The lever action is just ad fun as claimed. I still prefer a bolt-gun for beginners and serious range shooting. But, I regret not buying one years ago.
I wanted to get a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x32 scope. But, I...
I haven't had much luck with squirrels this week. But, I've seen deer everyday I've gone out. This morning they came within bow shot. I had fun watching them through my rifle scope. Oh, did I mention the bear?
Stewart State forest has a lot of Red Squirrels. They are generally easier to hunt than greys because they feed on the ground. They also make a loud grinding noise. They stand out starkly againt the snow. They're fun to blast with a shotgun. But, they are strictly varmits and I don't hunt them...
I found a super-cheap Barska 3-7x20 scope in the back of the closet. I mounted it on the Henry as a interim optic. The rain kept me out if the woods, so I took it to the range to get sighted at 25 yards. I sighted in using CCI SV and tested CB shorts, Target Shorts, and Aguila super extra...
I took my bike through Stewart earlier this summer saw about a dozen rabbits just on the trail. I also saw a couple of grouse and fox as well.
I'd love to hunt rabbits, but I don't have a dog....or someone to act like a dog. Squirrels offer just about everything I need to get ready for deer...
During the frontier era, a woodsman would only carry one muzzleloader. The firearm would be expected to take all kinds of game both big and small. They would take squirrels by "barking" them. That's shooting a spot on the tree close to the squirrel's head. Wood shrapnel and the fall from the...
Early squirrel season is here. I bought the CZ455 last winter, so it was first in the rotation. I took one squirrel about 20 minutes after sunrise.
The weather was cool and the wind was calm. I saw two other squirrels, but I didn't have a good shot.
CZ 455 American 22LR Bushnell 4-14x40...
My eyes are crap. If I watn to shoot it past 25 yards, I'll need a scope.
I might go for a good adjustable rear peep sight, if anyone has good suggestions.
I noticed that Henry Classic Lever 22LR were on sale at Dick's for $299. I've always wanted one. So, I proceeded on full impulse.
I want to get it into the field as soon as possible. I'm wondering what accessories I should get.
I'm thinking about a nice 4x32 Rimfire scope. Something small and...
