I'm ok with the height but like you I never seem to use the irons, I'm just to lazy to remount it! As I get older optics become more a necessity than a luxury.
I love my 336 (30-30) It dates to 1967 (JM). I picked it up about 15 years ago for around $400. It just feels "right" and smooth as butter, never have had a issue with it.
As for the new ones...I've never been a fan of laminated stocks.
