No personal experience, but I have heard of nothing but bad things in regards to flying with a pistol out of an NYC airport.. Airlines go by the FAA and TSA rules. NYPD go by their own. Be careful man. Have a lawyer's number ready JIC. Long guns different story. Ive heard that is only a minor PITA.

For Pistols and Rifles usually immediately after use. Maybe a day or two at most if im lazy. I try to shoot skeet at least once a week so my shotgun goes probably 1k+ before a cleaning
