FWIW

In 1977 when I went on the cough cough books minimum wage was $2.30
Full Time - 8 hours of work before taxes comes to $18.40.
Part Time - 4 hours of work before taxes comes to $9.20.
Just thought I'd mention it.

When I was younger basically the only minimum wage workers were the high school kids just starting out or the retirees making a little extra money. Back then people weren't expecting to totally support themselves off the minimum wage.

Either get an education or like in my case be a quick learner and make more than the minimum wage. I didn't finish high school for reasons but I have always earned well over minimum wage. But with the minimum wage so high these days things have changed. So that's something to consider.

I got out of high school in 1976 and snapped up a job paying $3.00 an hour, pissed all my friends off because they were at $2.35-2.50. I worked that job second shift 40 hrs and no OT. For extra I worked weekends on a farm for between $1.35-2.50 depending on what I did.
I guess I'm making the same point you did.????

If I don't charge labor and repair people's junk for free then I would have no money to live on.

Oh, that's right, you said everything for free forever. In that case, I wouldn't have to work, and I'd be rich and be able to afford anything I wanted. Who can't afford free?
But then who would install the new brake lines on the customer's rusty junk?

I was getting $1.95 at McDonald's, that was $0.05 over minwage.

IIRC, up until 1976 there was a farm wage. I think it was 10-15 cents lower than the minimum wage.

I grew up on a farm and my dad just paid me whatever. If I did my part he paid me pretty well.
I'm talking about when my brothers and I were kids and into our early teens though. I left school before I graduated so I could work 50-60 hours a week on the farm. That's when I started to get paid hourly under the table.

Meh, I have no regrets about only having a 10th grade education because I was still able to make a nice life for the wife and me. Between being a quick learner and an unstoppable work ethic I made it work out.

I did get my GED after I left school just to make my mother happy. Other than that it has served no other purpose in my life. And I have always earned well over minimum wage.

This forum has done more for me than the GED. I have learned somewhat proper grammar by being on this forum for the last 12 years. That includes the previous one (NYG.)

I'm sliding off topic again so I'll just say, I don't think that I have personally known anyone that has worked for minimum wage. But it's so high now I would imagine it isn't as uncommon as it once was.

Yea, but an ounce of gold cost $170 in 1977 too.

We don't need a "living wage" we need sound money.

O o e will work there unless the companies can’t leave. You’ll have service industry but I’m not sure you’ll have much else. Zero manufacturing and I’m not sure how many franchise places will stay. Many places already won’t hire people from California and all remote workers from California will promptly lose their jobs.
